Grand Jury Commends Sheriff’s Department

Members of the DeKalb County Grand Jury toured the jail last week and had good things to say in it’s report to the court.
The report states that “The consensus of the Grand Jury was that everything was clean and organized. We were impressed with the open door policy for any citizens to visit the jail and the willingness of the Sheriff to answer any questions.”

Fermon Brown Culwell

79 year old Fermon Brown Culwell of Smithville died Saturday at his residence. He was a self employed nurseryman and he attended the Old Fashion Free Will Baptist Church. Culwell was also a U.S. Navy and Army Veteran and served during the Korean War time. The funeral will be Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Bonham Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.; Sunday, from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.; and Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elijah and Lera Summers Culwell; his wife, Ravanell Culwell; a brother, Boyd Culwell; and a sister Evie Colwell. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Deborah Culwell of Smithville. A grandson, Tommy and his wife Erin Culwell of McMinnville. A granddaughter, Christ and her husband Wayne Newby of McMinnville. A great grandson, Austin Newby of McMinnville. A brother, Floyd Culwell of Smithville. Three sisters, Frances Hullett, Ocie Marie Arnold, and Wanda Cantrell all of Smithville. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. The family requests that donations be made to Lazarus House Hospice in lieu of flowers.

Man Indicted For Vehicular Homicide In April Car Crash

A 19 year old man was indicted by the DeKalb Couny Grand Jury this week for vehicular homicide as the result of an April traffic accident in Smithville, in which 69 year old Ofallon Byford later died.
Joshua James Kneer of 313 Park Street, Syracuse New York was arrested Wednesday on a sealed indictment charging him with vehicular homicide by intoxication, vehicular homicide (recklessness), driving under the influence, and driving on a suspended license. His bond is set at $100,000.
Kneer was also indicted on a separate charge of driving while suspended.
Smithville Police said at the time of the accident that Byford was driving east on Broad Street in a 1993 Ford Tauras when a 1988 Pontiac, driven by Kneer of West Main Street, attempting to cross Broad Street from Carter Street, pulled into her path.
Kneer was not seriously injured but he was charged with failure to yield, violation of the financial responsibility law, violation of the seat belt law, and driving on a suspended license.
Byford was transported by DeKalb EMS to DeKalb Hospital and then to the parking lot of the high school where she was airlifted by helicopter ambulance to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville. She died in June.

Alexandria Celebrates Christmas with Parade

Hundreds turned out on a bright sunny afternoon for the Alexandria Christmas Parade Saturday.
The parade featured seasonal floats, the DCHS band, vintage automobiles, and of course, Santa Claus, among many other entries.
Phil Jones of NewsChannel 5 flew to town in the Sky 5 helicopter and he served as Grand Marshal of the Parade.
The West Main Baptist Church of Alexandria took first place among the parade entries. The Alexandria First Baptist Church received second place and Mason Carter’s antique tractor took third place.
Many people also won drawings for cash, country hams, bicycles, and a $100 savings bond after the parade.

Matt Bates

18 year old Matt Bates of Smithville died Thursday at Vanderbilt Hospital. He was a member of the Smithville First Free Wil Baptist Church. The funeral will be Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. David Young and Mark Kennedy will officiate and burial will be in the Bonham Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Boyd Culwell and his paternal grandparents, Homer and Juanita Bates. Survivors include his mother, Deborah Bates; his father Tony Bates; a sister and brother-in-law, Jennifer and Luke Judkins; his grandmother, Linda Culwell; a niece and a nephew, Faith and Eli Judkins all of Smithville. Several aunts and uncles also survive. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. The family has asked that donations be made to the Upper Cumberland Youth Camp.

Man Dies From Injuries In Thursday Afternoon Wreck

An 18 year old DeKalb County man died Thursday night at Vanderbilt Hospital from injuries he received in a one vehicle traffic accident Thursday afternoon on Bright Hill Road.
Dead is Matthew Bates of Page Drive, Smithville.
Sergeant Billy Prater of the Tennessee Highway Patrol says Bates was a passenger of a 1988 GMC Jimmy, driven by 18 year old Joshua Puckett of Four Seasons Road, Smithville. The accident occurred around 12:50 p.m. Thursday about four-tenths of a mile north of Hooper Road on Bright Hill Road.
Sergeant Prater says Puckett was driving toward town and was negotiating a curve when the vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway, began to rotate, traveled up a grass embankment, and then overturned. The vehicle came to rest in the west ditchline of Bright Hill Road facing south. Both Puckett and Bates were ejected. Neither was wearing a seatbelt.
Puckett and Bates were taken by DeKalb EMS from the scene to meet a Vandy Life Flight helicopter ambulance and were flown to Vanderbilt Hospital.
Sergeant Prater was assisted at the scene by Trooper Brian Raymond of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department, EMS, and DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Fighters.

Grand Jury Indicts Twenty Four

A total of twenty four people were indicted by the December term of the DeKalb County Grand Jury Monday and Tuesday including one in a sealed indictment.
All those indicted will appear for arraignment in DeKalb County Criminal Court on Monday, December 18th

Jim Gantzer

62 year old Jim Gantzer of Smithville died Wednesday at his residence. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran and a steam fitter. He was preceded in death by his parents, James H. and Gertrude M. Hay Gantzer. Mr. Gantzer’s remains have been cremated. There will be no visitation or services held. Survivors include his wife, Kathy Gantzer of Smithville. Five children, Todd Gantzer of Boston Massachusetts, Jamie Gantzer of Smithville, Todd Zimmerman of Boston Massachusetts, Terri Hockenberry of Lockport, New York, Tamara Dragon of Mocksville, North Carolina. Seven grandchildren and an uncle, Phillip Becker of Cumming, Georgia. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. The family has requested that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.

Modena Hancock Fuston

78 year old Modena Hancock Fuston of Woodbury died Saturday of a sudden illness. She was a native of Warren County and the daughter of the late Norman Buel (N.B.) and Lila Martin Hancock. The funeral will be Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Woodbury Funeral Home. Carl Witty, William Timothy Hill, and David Arnold will officiate and burial will be in the Bethany Cemetery. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Kathie Fuston of Columbia; two grandsons, Bert and Brent Couch of Columbia and caretaker, Wanda Farless of Woodbury. Woodbury Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation with the family will be Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Robert Eldon Robinson

81 year old Robert Eldon Robinson of Smithville died Tuesday at Spencer Generations. He was a Baptist and a retired employee of the DeKalb County Landfill. A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at Salem Cemetery at Liberty. Junior Hibdon will officiate. He was preceded in death by his parents, Williams Floyd and Clara Macon Bluhm Robinson and a sister, Lois Barber. Survivors include a daughter, Linda Barber of Smithville. Two grandsons, Danny Barber of Cookeville and Scotty Barber of Smithville. One great grandson, James Dillion Barber of Smithville. One step-daughter, Julie Van Bomel. One step-son, Kenneth Lee and three step grandchildren all of McMinnville. Two ex wives, Ann Robinson Smith of Smithville and Mary Belle Robinson of McMinnville. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. The family has asked that no flowers be sent all all donations please be made to the funeral home to help with burial expenses.
