Buddy Cleveland (Clevie) Petty age 53 of Smithville passed away Sunday night May 31, 2015 at DeKalb Community Hospital ER. He was born May 30, 1962 to his parents the late Grover Cleveland Petty and Martha Ann Tisdale. He worked in construction and attended Pomeroy Chapel Brethren In Christ. Funeral Services will be held 4:30PM Wednesday at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Jack Patterson officiating and burial in the Petty Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Tuesday 12:PM until 8:PM and Wednesday 10:AM until time of service at 4:30PM. Survivors include: 2 Daughters: Tawanna Petty and Tamara Petty both of Smithville; 3 Grandchildren : Brittney Petty, Tabitha Estes, Tyler Estes; Mother: Martha Ann Tisdale of Smithville; 2 Sisters: Sylvia Stanley of Smithville, Denise Garcia of Lebanon; 4 Brothers: Bennie Cantrell, Tony Petty, Homer Petty, Mark Petty all of Smithville. Gary “Baldy” Jones age 69 of The Belk Community of DeKalb County passed away Sunday morning, May 31, 2015 at NHC HealthCare Center in Smithville. Gary was born May 14, 1946 to his parents, the late Cephas and Grace Cantrell Jones. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Roger Jones; 4 Brothers: Troy Jones, Joe Jones, Roger Jones, Charles Jones. Mr. Gary Jones attended New Union The Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held 2:PM Wednesday with Bro. Michael Hale officiating and burial will be in the New Union Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Wednesday 10:AM until time of the service at 2:PM. Survivors include: 1 Son: Michael Jones of Smithville; Grandchildren: Casey Jones, Micah Jones, Drew Jones, Kody Tanner; 1 Daughter: Kristine Tanner of McMinnville; 1 Brother: Cantrell (Margaret) Jones of Smithville; 1 Sister: Billie Grace (Phillip) Estes of Smithville. Chamber Presents Milestone Award to Caney Fork Electric Cooperative

The Smithville-DeKalb County Chamber of Commerce recently presented a Milestone Award to Caney Fork Electric Cooperative celebrating 75 Years of serving DeKalb, Warren, White, and Van Buren counties.
Today Caney Fork Electric has approximately 32,000 members and employs 79 people. Caney Fork Electric’s Smithville office is located at 580 East Broad Street.

The DeKalb County Fair has released the catalog of premium rules for exhibit entries at this year’s “Grandpa Fair of the South” set for Monday through Saturday, July 20-25 in Alexandria. This year’s theme is “Country Scenes and Beauty Queens”.
No matter what you love to do you can compete at the Fair!
Whether cooking, quilting, raising goats, taking great pictures, or having really beautiful tomatoes, you can find the right event for you in the Kenneth Sandlin Exhibit Building.

Magness Wins People’s Choice Award at DeKalb Art Exhibit

Smithville Elementary School first grader Laura Magness was the winner of the People’s Choice Award for the DeKalb Art Exhibit held Saturday at the County Complex.
Magness’ art teacher is Ms. Carol Tripp.
Meanwhile, Leah Clark of DCHS was awarded for Best of Show
Many DeKalb County students showcased their artistic talents in this annual event sponsored by the Smithville Study Club.

Helen Mai Herman

72 year old Helen Mai Herman of Smithville died Saturday evening at DeKalb Community Hospital. She was a member of the Temple Baptist Church and was retired from Kingston Timers. The funeral will be Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Bonham Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 4-8 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the service at 1 p.m. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harrison and Lillie Neal Hall; a brother, Jimmy Hall; two sisters, Lucille Holmes and Corinne Kelly; and two half brothers, O.P. and L.D. Hall. She is survived by a son, Paul Sullivan and fiancé Wanda Call of McMinnville. Husband, Darrell Malcomb of Smithville. Granddaughter, Kaylee Brook Sullivan of McMinnville. Three step daughters, Frances and husband Joel Adcock, Brenda and husband Stevie Cripps, and Patricia and husband Jerry Lawson all of Smithville. Four sisters, Ruby Nell Hall of Smithville, Kathryn Holmes of Chattanooga, Margaret Swaney of Georgia, and Sue and husband, Ronald Hill of Smithville. Nine nieces and nephews. Jack Donald Johnson

84 year old Jack Donald Johnson of Alexandria died Saturday at UMC Hospital in Lebanon. He was born in DeKalb County and was a member of the Mount Zion Baptist Church. He worked 27 years at Craft. Johnson also served for 15 years on the county commission and worked for 20 years at the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office. The funeral will be Monday at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria. Ronnie Smith will officiate and burial will be in the Mount Zion Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-8 p.m. and Monday from 10 a.m. until the service. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, Vance Johnson and Margaret Williams and his wife, Patsy Nell Johnson. He is survived by his children, Jackie Johnson, Dave Johnson, Debbie and husband Bennie Curtis, and Donnie and wife Jocelyn Johnson all of Alexandria. Grandchildren, Brandon Johnson, Michelle Overstreet, Jamie Johnson, Clint Johnson, Chad Curtis, Ty Curtis, Jeremie Johnson, and Jennifer Johnson. Several great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews survive. A sister, Sue McMillen and brother, Paul Johnson both of Alexandria. Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Mount Zion Cemetery Fund in his memory.
