Joan Carol (Chandler) Paulsen

Joan Carol (Chandler) Paulsen, age 77 of Smithvile, died peacefully in her sleep at Alive Hospice Care Center in Nashville on Friday, July 27.
Joan was born on February 27, 1935 in Rhinelander, Wisconsin where grew she grew up and married the late Duane “Duke” H. Paulsen. They enjoyed 38 years of marriage until his death on December 12, 1996. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Fred and Genevieve Chandler of Rhinelander, Wisconsin, as well as one brother, Eugene Chandler. Joan is survived by daughters, Lori and husband Roger Bowman of Smithville and Kelle and husband Brian Dorn of Antigo, Wisconsin; one son, Grant and wife Tamara Paulsen of Smithville. Surviving her as well are three grandsons: Jeremy and wife Sheena Zoller of Huntsville, Alabama; Justin Zoller of Nashville and Jesse Zoller of Smyrna as well as four granddaughters, Jayme and MaKenzie Dorn of Antigo, Wisconsin and Tessa and Giana Paulsen of Smithville, and one great-granddaughter, Karsen Zoller of Huntsville, Alabama. Surviving her as well are her brother, Robert and wife Eva Chandler of Gurnee, Illinois, her sister-in-law, and close friend Virginia Joan Paulsen, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Joan had an intense love for her family. She cherished being a wife, mother, grandmother, and most recently a great-grandmother. Joan also had an ardent zeal for the worship of her God, Jehovah. She dedicated her life to Him in July of 1962. She served Him faithfully in Wisconsin, and she was most recently an active member of the Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Smithville, where she zealously fulfilled her dedication until her death.
Memorial services for Joan will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 981 East Broad Street, Smithville on Saturday, August 4 at 4:00 p.m. Family and friends are invited to share their condolences and memories of Joan with the family from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.

Kenneth Moore

78 year old Kenneth Moore of Dowelltown died Friday at NHC Healthcare. He was member of the Gideon’s and the DeKalb County Election Commission. He was also a Deacon at Indian Creek Memorial Baptist Church and recently he attended the Allen’s Chapel Methodist Church. Moore was a retired plant manager for Work Wear. The funeral will be Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Terry Fesler and Thurman Seber will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the service at 2:00 p.m. Moore was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Ollie Pack Moore; a brother, Jim Moore, Jr.; and two sisters, Mable Duke and Myrtis Puckett Winton. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorla Nixon Moore of Dowelltown. A son, Joel Moore of Dowelltown. A granddaughter. Caitlin Moore. A sister-in-law, Sarah Moore of Readyville. Waylon Ray Farless

36 year old Waylon Ray Farless of Smithville died this week in Chattanooga. He was a nurseryman. A graveside service will be Friday at 5:00 p.m. at Center Hill Cemetery. No visitation will be held at the funeral home. He was preceded in death by two infant siblings; his grandmother, Hilda Bogle; grandfather, Ray Farless; grandparents, Robert and Coralee Prater. He is survived by children, Johnny and Montana Farless; his father, Ronnie Farless; his mother, Sheryl McCowen; step mother, Cynthia Murphy; two sisters, Amanda Lattimore and Crystal Farless; mother of his children, Keshia Farless; and several aunts and uncles. Maxine Matilda Hale Nokes

83 year old Maxine Matilda Hale Nokes of Smithville died Saturday at DeKalb Community Hospital . She was a native of Cannon County. A member of the Short Mountain Methodist Church, she was a retired School Teacher at Short Mtn. School and Mud College. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society and the Eastern Star. The funeral will be Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Woodbury Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Melton Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Hester Melton Hale; siblings, Ray, Shelah, Paul and James Thomas Hale, Ruth Barrett and Dorothy McDougal. Survivors include her 4 Sons: Gerry (Rita) Nokes and Jeffery (Maureen) Nokes, both of Short Mountain, Nicholas (Patsy) Nokes, Sr., of Liberty; Billy (Kathy) Nokes of Pea Ridge. Brenda Joyce Taylor

61 year old Brenda Joyce Taylor died Sunday at NHC of Smithville. She was a retired machine operator at Kingston Timer. The funeral will be Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Tommy Taylor will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.; Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.; and Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until the service at 4:00 p.m. She was preceded in death by her parents, Junior Matthews and Betty Frances Murphy; a son, Jerry Wayne Taylor; and three sisters and a brother. Taylor is survived by her husband of 46 years, Grady Lee Taylor of Smithville. Three daughters, Melinda and husband Bobby Hullett, Janie and husband Adam Hale and Vickey and husband Freddy Atnip all of Smithville. Four sons, Ronnie Taylor and Stacy Braswell of Smithville, Billy and wife Kim Neal of McMinnville, Jimmy and wife Romanda Taylor of Smithville, and Timmy Taylor of Smithville. Nineteen grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and six brothers, James and wife Darlene Matthews of Gassaway, William and wife Rita Matthews, Willie Matthews, Roy and wife Debbie Matthews, Randall Neal, and Doug and wife Norma Murphy all of Smithville. Jenna Sue Roller

41 year old Jenna Sue Roller of Smithville died Friday at her residence. She was disabled. A graveside service will be Monday ay 4:30 p.m. at the Ararat Cemetery. Charlie Lawson will officiate. Visitation will be Monday from Noon until 4:00 p.m. at which time the family will leave for the cemetery. She was preceded in death by her father, Alvie Estes and a sister, Lisa Devault. Survivors include children, Molly Lawrence and George Roller both of Smithville. Grandchild, Aiden LaBron Lawrence of Smithville. Mother, Dixie Estes of Smithville. Brothers and sisters, Jimmy Estes of Smithville, Jerry and wife Tammy Estes of Pea Ridge, Dorren Reece of Smithville, Cathy and husband Bruce Chapman of Liberty, and Patsy Estes and Ricky Estes both of Smithville. Timothy Lloyd Caldwell

50 year old Timothy Lloyd Caldwell of Dowelltown died Friday at Vanderbilt Medical Center. He was a maintenance worker with Foutch Industries. He attended the Faith Congregational Methodist Church. The funeral will be Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. B.J. Thomason and Nathan Thomason will officiate and burial will be in Salem Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Monday from 8:00 a.m. until the service. Caldwell was preceded in death by his mother, Shirley Ann Herman and a brother, Gregory Caldwell. Survivors include his father, Ralph (Tommy) Caldwell of Dowelltown. A niece, Rosha Prater of Colorado. Three aunts, Marie and husband Alfred Nixon of Watertown, Shirley Southard of Smithville and Patsey and husband W.H. “Red” Clark of Smithville. Douglas McArthur Swofford

69 year old Douglas McArthur Swofford of Smithville died Thursday at NHC of Smithville. He was a member of the Church of Christ. He was also a construction worker with the Nashville Bridge Company and worked twelve years for the City of Smithville. The funeral will be Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Bernard Houk will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Maggie Whitson Swofford and a brother, Kenneth Swafford. Survivors include his wife of three years, Alma Swofford of Smithville. A son, Robert Swofford of Lebanon. One step son, Adam and wife Sue Colwell of Smithville. Three step daughters, Frances and husband Tommy Cates of Smithville, Eva and husband Carl Bandy of Smithville, and Rita and husband Jimmy Taylor of Smithville. Danny Warren Smith

Danny Warren Smith, age 65, of Lebanon, TN passed away Sunday, July 15, 2012 at his residence.
Mr. Smith was born August 20, 1946 in Dekalb County, TN the son of the late Frank and Irene Scott Smith. He was also preceded in death by his Daughter; Dana Smith Barrett, Granddaughter; Kayla Roberts, and Brother; John Donald “Don” Smith. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1965 to 1969. He went to Law School in Nashville for 3 years and later worked for TN Metal Works. He was the Human Resource Director for 5 years at Kotes. He had worked in maintenance at the Tennessean for the last 25 years. He served on the Wilson County Fair Board and the Foundation Committee of Fiddler’s Grove. He married Donna Faye Thomas on October 29, 2001.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife; Donna Faye Smith of Lebanon, TN, Three Children; Tracy (Mark) Christian of Watertown, TN, Kim Roberts (Steve Hill) of Gladeville, TN, and Kevin (Tonya) Roberts of Liberty, TN. Brother; Robert “Pete” Smith of Lebanon, TN, Sister; Janet Parrish of Madison, TN. Six Grandchildren; Cruz (Heather) Christian, Cody Christian, Hannah Christian, Zach Roberts, Noah Roberts, and Emily Roberts.
Funeral Services for Mr. Smith are scheduled for Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at 1 PM at Avant Funeral Home with Bro. Mark Wade officiating. Interment will follow in the Salem Cemetery.
Visitation with the Smith family will be at Avant Funeral Home on Monday from 4 PM until 8 PM and on Tuesday from 10 AM until service time at 1 PM.

Clifton Ray Dexter

69 year old Clifton Ray Dexter of Smithville died Saturday at Kindred Nursing and Rehabilitation in Smith County. He was a member of the Prosperity Baptist Church, Christian Motorcycle Association, and he was a telephone line installer. He served in the U.S. Army. The funeral will be Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Doyle Slager will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Sunday from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. He was preceded in death by his father, Clifton J. Dexter; a son, Gary Ray Dexter; and daughter, Delisa Sue Dexter. Survivors include a daughter, Tina and husband James Boston of Dowelltown. Grandchildren, Ashley and Anthony Bain, Dakota and Savannah Dexter all of Smithville.
