53 year old Bill Oberdorf died Wednesday. The family will be receiving friends at Sellars Funeral Home in Lebanon from 4-8 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. until the service on Saturday. The funeral will be Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Sellars Funeral Home. Danny Sellars will officiate. Mildred Hillis McClain

85 year old Mildred Hillis McClain, a Vervilla Community resident and Van Buren County native died Wednesday at her residence following an extended illness. A homemaker and member of the Pleasant Knoll Church of Christ, she was the daughter of the late James Robert “Jim Bob” and Lena Hillis. Her husband Clifford Franklin McClain preceded her in death. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by brother and sister-in-law, James Willard and Pauline Hillis and brother-in-law, Thomas H. Tolbert. She is survived by one sister, Wilma Tolbert of Nashville; brother and sister-in-law, William Loyd and Dorothy Hillis of Fairborn, Ohio; nieces and nephews, Richard and Faye McClain, Nancy and Steve Helton and Phillip and Fredia Reynolds all of Morrison, Iona and David King and Frank and Sharon Reynolds both of McMinnville, Phyllis Reynolds of Calhoun, Georgia, Kay and George Thaxton of Viola, Ann Womack of Manchester, Harrell and Gwen Tolbert of Smithville, Tommy and Melissa Tolbert of Nashville, Betty and Larry Underwood of Huber Heights, Ohio and Debbie Hillis of Fairborn, Ohio; aunt, Elizabeth Hillis of the Rocky River Community; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. The funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Chapel of High Funeral Home in McMinnville with Jerry Finney and Harrell Tolbert officiating. 55 year old Jerry Bingham of Smithville and formerly of Monterey died Sunday at DeKalb Community Hospital. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel of Horner Funeral Home in Monterey. Burial will be in the Wilson Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. He is survived by his wife, Janet Phy Bingham and a son, Michael Bingham. Reverend Robert H. “Bob” King

83 year old Reverend Robert H. “Bob” King of McMinnville died Saturday at DeKalb Community Hospital. He was a minister for over 35 years. King was also a truck driver for the Interstate Block Company and he worked as a timber cutter. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Apostolic Church of Restoration in Cowen. Burial will be in the Cowan Montgomery Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the service at 2:00 p.m. at the church. King was preceded in death by brothers, Vernon and Roy King. Survivors include his wife, Betty Towery King of McMinnville. 53 year old Timothy Brian James died Saturday at his residence in LaGrange. He worked for the Cleveland Construction Company. He had been in the construction field for over 30 years. 88 year old Evelyn P. Ramsey of Smithville died Saturday at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. She was owner of Evelyn’s Kitchen and a member of the Church of God. Virgle Seborn Cantrell

83 year old Virgle Seborn Cantrell of Smithville died Saturday at NHC HealthCare Center in Smithville. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and a carpenter and mason worker. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Mount View Primitive Baptist Church, where he was a member and served as a deacon since 1961. He and his brothers built the church building in 1971. Elder Paul Violet and Elder Ricky Arnold will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Monday from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until 1:15 p.m. at which time the body will be taken to the church for the service. Cantrell was preceded in death by his parents, Zollie and Viola Adcock Cantrell; brothers, Gentry Edward, Ernest Cliff, and John Thomas Cantrell, Sr,; and a sister, Jackie Gay. He is survived by his wife of 61 1/2 years, Louise Cantrell of Smithville. A son, Dana Cantrell of Smithville. A foster daughter, Doris Cantrell and husband Steve Cantrell of Smithville. A granddaughter, Arian Cantrell of Kentucky. Brothers, Glynn A. Cantrell of Smithville and Zollie D. Cantrell of Knoxville. Elsie Emaline Waldron Turner

83 year old Elsie Emaline Waldron Turner of Sparta died Thursday at DeKalb Community Hospital. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. The funeral will be Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Adam Scales and Dwight Knowles will officiate and burial will be in the Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 12:30 p.m. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Edwin and Beatrice Miller Waldron; a son, William Gregory, and a sister, Juanita Tomlin. Survivors include a son, Mark and wife Connie Smith of Murfreesboro. Two daughters, Diane and husband Rayford Scales of Kentucky and Debbie Embree of Nashville. Charles A. Lindburg Young

77 year old Charles A. Lindburg Young of McMinnville died Wednesday at Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville. He was a former employee of the Warren County Highway Department and a nursery worker. The funeral will be Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at the Chapel of High Funeral Home in McMinnville. Kenneth W. Kirby will officiate and burial will be in the Young Cemetery in DeKalb County. Visitation will be Friday from noon until 9:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the service. He was preceded in death by his parents, Christopher Columbus and Cleo Luna Young; two grandchildren, Charity Stembridge and Nicki Young; and two brothers, Leonard and John D. Young. Survivors include his wife, Hester Myers Young of McMinnville. Seven children, Linda and husband Edward Richardson of Rock Island, Tommy and wife Melinda Adams of McMinnville, Jean Young of McMinnville, Melinda Stembridge of McMinnville, Sherry Wellman and Paul White of McMinnville, Gloria Skinner of McMinnville, and Jennifer Hayes of McMinnville. Two step-sons, Darrell Myers of Hillsboro and Bennie and wife Ella Adams of McMinnville. Twenty three grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren survive along with a brother, Earl and wife Joann Young of McMinnville. Dr. W.E. “Doc” Vanatta

91 year old Dr. W.E. “Doc” Vanatta of Smithville died Thursday at his residence. The funeral will be Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the Smithville Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Larry Green will officiate and burial will be at DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Friday from noon until 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Love-Cantrell Funeral Home and from noon until 2:00 p.m. at the church. Dr. Vanatta was a Chiropractor and a member of the Smithville Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Dr. Vanatta was ordained as an Elder in 1950 and he had been an assistant Sunday School Superintendent since 1947 and a Sunday School teacher at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Dr. Vanatta was one of the original owners of WJLE from 1964-2007 and he received the Tennessee Association of Broadcasters Lifetime Membership Award at the 60th Anniversary Gala in May, 2008. He was one of the first members appointed to serve as director on the Smithville Electric System board when the utility was established in 1969 and he remained an active member and Vice Chairman until his death. He was also a talented musician. Dr. Vanatta was preceded in death by his parents, Jasper Willins and Amanda Elizabeth Estes Vanatta and his first wife, Louise Corley Vanatta. He is survived by his wife, Nell Vanatta of McMinnville. Two daughters and sons-in-law, Jeanne and Donnie Foutch of Old Hickory and Mary and Oscar Boyd of Smithville. Two step-sons, James Timothy and wife Ruth White of Atlanta, Georgia and Gerald Harvey and wife Charlene White of Georgia. Step-daughter, Marilyn and husband Tom Angelo of California. Two granddaughters, Renee and husband Eric Renner of Alabama and Robin and husband Jeremy Mahlow of Knoxville. Five great grandchildren, Camden and Mark Renner of Alabama, Eleanor, John and Oliver Mahlow of Knoxville.
