Edward Douglas Hildreth, Sr

87 year old Edward Douglas Hildreth, Sr. of Clarksville, died Sunday at Gateway Medical Center.
Hildreth was born in Wilson County to Charles Edward and Eva Robinson Hildreth who preceded him in death. His wife, Marie Neal Hubbard, also deceased.
Hildreth was an electrical engineering graduate of the University of Tennessee. He was a registered professional engineer in Alabama and Tennessee. During World War II he served as an Infantry Officer in the Pacific theater and in the Korean War he served with the 187th RCT Airborne (Rakkasans) as a communications officer. After his military service he worked as an engineer with Miller Electric Company on the construction of the Savannah River Project in Akin, South Carolina and with Patchen and Zimmerman consulting engineers, Augusta, Georgia on various projects throughout the Southeast. He was the first manager of the DeKalb Telephone Cooperative Inc. and made numerous acquisitions of small telephone companies building a communication system from 508 telephone users to over 22,000 plus today with modern equipment and services. He was President of the Tennessee Telephone Association in 1960. In 1960 he moved to Huntsville, Alabama and joined NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center as Director of Communications supporting various NASA awards including two NASA Exceptional Service Medals. He also received the Middle Tennessee Boy Scouts of America Long Rifle Award and was a Charter President of the Alexandria Lions Club. He was a member of the Alexandria Masonic Lodge, Nashville Scottish Rite, Huntsville, Alabama Cahaba Shrine, VFW and American Legion. He attended Park Lane Church of the Nazarene.
A celebration of life service will be held at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday at Neal-Tarpley-Parchman Chapelin Clarksville. Larry Spraker and Maury Norman will officiate. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and from 8:00 a.m. until the time of the service Wednesday at the funeral home. Entombment will be in Valhalla Memory Gardens, Huntsville, Alabama. Survivors include a son E. Douglas Hildreth, Jr. and his wife Vicki; a sister Evelyn Griffin; three grandchildren, Josh Hildreth of Washington, D.C.; Kelly Stevenson of Denver, Colorado; and Katie Hildreth of Clarksville, one great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews. Mary Pauline Malone

84 year old Mary Pauline Malone of Dowelltown died Sunday at DeKalb Community Hospital. She was a homemaker and a member of the House of Prayer. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Tommy Taylor and Shane Smith will officiate and burial will be in Hillview Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.; Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.; and Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the service at 2:00 p.m. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Clyde Malone; parents, Toy Foster and Alma Carter Foster Ervin; brother, Thurman Foster; and step-father, Tom Ervin. Survivors include two sons, Carl and wife Brenda Malone of Dowelltown and Gerald and wife Rita Malone of Liberty. Daisy Myrtle Pedigo

96 year old Daisy Myrtle Pedigo of Smithville died Saturday at River Park Hospital in McMinnville. She was of the Baptist faith and she worked at the shirt factory. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. until the service at 2:00 p.m. She was preceded in death by her husband, Doak Pedigo; parents, William Riley and Allie Elmer Maxwell Gambrell; sisters, Mable Pedigo, Calra Alice Trapp, and Velma Leona Hutchings Parrish; brothers, Ruben Solon, Loyd Ray, Roy Lee, William David, Fred Winston, James Clifford, and Verbal Gambrell. Survivors include a brother, Floyd “Joe” Gambrell of McMinnville. A sister-in-law, Janelle Gambrell. Norman Henson Caldwell

76 year old Norman Henson Caldwell of Smithville died Friday at the Alvin C. York Veterans Hospital in Murfreesboro. He was a retired Army veteran, a member of the Mount Pisgah Baptist Church, and the VFW and American Legion. The funeral will be Monday at 10:00 a.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Glen Burks will officiate and burial will be in Whorton Springs Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the service at 10:00 a.m. He was preceded in death by his parents, Will and Lena Ferrell Caldwell; his wife, Sylvia Caldwell; two sisters, Lois Moon and Nannie Mae Hale; and two brothers, Wade and J.W. Caldwell. Survivors include a son, Ricky Caldwell; two daughters, Connie and husband Greg Rigsby and Maria and husband Ricky Parsley. Loyd Lee Hale

82 year old Loyd Lee Hale of Smithville died Thursday at DeKalb Community Hospital. He was a member of the Smithville First Freewill Baptist Church, a shirt factory worker, and a farmer. The funeral will be Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Bernard Houk and Dathan Hale will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. until the service at 3:00 p.m. Hale was preceded in death by his parents, Isaac and Dexie Hale; a brother, James Hale; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ed and Fannie Graham; a sister-in-law, Hazel Hale; and a brother-in-law, Wayne Graham. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Josephine Hale of Smithville. Two sons. Rickey and wife Diane Hale and Mark and wife Patty Hale all of Smithville. Abraham Poteet “A.P.” McClain

85 year old Abraham Poteet “A.P.” McClain of Cookeville died Sunday at the Masters Health Care Center in Algood. The funeral will be Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Cookeville City Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. He is survived locally by a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Steve London; Grandson, Jeff and wife Dana London; and Great grandchildren, Caleb and Courtney London all of Smithville. Steven Frazier Knowles

47 year old Steven Frazier Knowles of Murfreesboro died Saturday. He was owner and operator of Knowles Nursery. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Woodfin Memorial Chapel in Murfreesboro. Burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens at 4:00 p.m. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Woodfin Memorial Chapel in Murfreesboro. Knowles was a 1981 graduate of DeKalb County High School where he played football. While playing football, he was selected 1st team all-state and he was named Most Valuable Player locally. Knowles also played football at MTSU from 1981-83. He was a brother of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. After graduating college, he worked in the family business, Knowles and Sons Nursery until it was sold and he started his own business, Knowles Nursery. He was preceded in death by his mother, Irene Frazier Knowles. Survivors include his wife, Laurie Knowles of Murfreesboro. A son, Steven Frazier Knowles, Jr. of Murfreesboro. His father, Roy Lewis Knowles of Cookeville. Brothers, Jim “Bear” Knowles, Kenneth and his wife Tammy Knowles, and Larry and his wife Melissa Knowles all of Smithville. Maudie Virginia Thomason

82 year old Maudie Virginia Thomason of Smithville died Friday at NHC Healthcare Center. She was a member of the Emmanuel Bread of Life Church and a factory worker. The funeral will be Monday at 1:00 p.m. at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. B.J. Thomason will officiate and burial will be in Salem Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the service at 1:00 p.m. She was preceded in death by her parents, Horace and Susie Vanatta Chapman; children, David Dale and Wanda Gail Thomason; and brothers, William Chapman and Jessie Chapman. Survivors include a daughter, Patsy and husband Jessie Drury of Smithville. Two sons, Doyle Thomason and Bobby and wife Ruby Thomason both of Smithville. David Wayne Alexander

29 year old David Wayne Alexander of Murfreesboro died Thursday at his residence. He was employed by Nissan and he was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The funeral will be Monday at 4:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Larry Green will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Sunday from 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the service at 4:00 p.m. Alexander was preceded in death by his grandparents, Charles Robinson and Robert and Jean Alexander. Survivors include his parents, Tommy and Joyce Alexander. One brother Rob and his wife Lori Alexander of Sparta. His grandmother, Jacqueline Robinson of Smithville. Carmyne Lowery

92 year old Carmyne Lowery of Smithville died Thursday at DeKalb Community Hospital. Lowery was a retired farmer, member of the Bethel Methodist Church, member of the Eastern Star, voter precinct worker, and Trustee of the Bethel Cemetery for over 30 years. The funeral will be Saturday at 5:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Wilson Williams, Terry Little, and Royce Martin will officiate and burial will be in the Bethel Cemetery. An Eastern Star Service will be Friday at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will be Friday from 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Lowery was preceded in death by parents, Robert and Johnnie Denby; adopted parents, Dora and Sam Marler; one son, Sherman Lowery; and two brothers, Joe and Frank O. Denby. Survivors include a daughter, JoAnn Blaylock of Smithville. Four grandchildren, Terry and Brian Blaylock of McMinnville, Mark Lowery of Hilham, and Cindy Phillips of Murfreesboro.
