94 year old Rubye Beatrice Cantrell died Monday at her residence in Jacksonville, Florida. She was formerly of the Belk Community, and a lifelong member of the New Union Baptist Church. She was employed by Kingston Timers. The funeral will be Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Anthony Pelham will officiate, with burial in New Union Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the service at 1:00 p.m. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cleaburn Cantrell, and her parents, W.A. and Ethel Ray Arnold. She is survived by a son, Wayne and wife Louise Cantrell of Florida.; a grandson, Rob and wife Dr. Ammala Cantrell of Flprida.; four great grandchildren, Christy, Lauren, Michelle, and Tres’. Mary Jo Johnson
66 year old Mary Jo Johnson of Smithville died Monday at her home. The funeral will be Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Whorton Springs Baptist Church in Smithville, where she was a member. David Mahan and Paul Stringer will officiate. Burial will be in DeKalb Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday at DeKalb Funeral Chapel from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Clayton and Ruby Alexander Bonds; one sister, Ruby Nell Holtzhouser; one brother, Danny Ray Bonds; a nephew, Jonathan Bonds; and one brother-in-law, Christian Richard Dalton. She is survived by her husband, Dennis Ray Johnson . A daughter, Kimberly Denise Johnson, daughter and son-in-law, Amy Lynell and Michael Wright; two grandsons, Matthew Sheldon and Westin Andrew Wright, all of Smithville. A brother and sister-in-law, Rondal and Sue Bond of Cordova. A sister, Judy Dalton of Sedalia, Missouri. 68 year old Joe Sadler of Dearborn Heights, Michigan died Saturday. A graveside service will be Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Sadler-LaFever Cemetery. 91 year old Mary Etta Goines died Saturday at Life Care in Sparta. The funeral will be Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at Thurman Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Lower Cherry Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Thurman Funeral Home. Cheryl Lynn Jennings
58 year old Cheryl Lynn Jennings of Alexandria died Thursday at U.M.C. Hospital in Lebanon. She was born in Davidson County, and was a homemaker. The funeral will be Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Anderson Funeral Home. Ronnie Smith will officiate with burial in Eastview Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the service at 3:00 p.m. She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Loraine Swann Davis; a brother, Jimmy Davis; mother and father-in-law, Beulah and Charles Jennings, and brother-in-law, Bill Jennings. She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Bob Jennings of Alexandria. Thomas Vaughn Romer Lantz
81 year old Thomas Vaughn Romer Lantz of Murfreesboro, a former Smithville Postmaster, died Saturday. He was born Thomas Vaughan Lantz on October 22, 1928 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Joseph Angelo and Florence Josephine Walk Lantz, following her death Tom was adopted by Charles and Mary Romer, sister to Tom’s mother.
In 1946, at age 17, Tom enlisted in the then Army-Air Corp and was stationed at Orlando, Florida, where he met and married Ilan Hughes, mother of their five sons. Over the next 23 years, Tom served his country proudly in the US Air
Force during WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. He retired as a Master Sergeant in 1968.
Following retirement from the USAF, Tom graduated the University of North Alabama with a bachelor’s degree in Education and a Master’s degree in Counseling. He taught school and coached football at E.O. Coffman Middle
School in Lawrence County for seven years. He served as Postmaster in Middleton and Smithville, TN until retirement in 1992. After retiring from the US Postal Service, Tom served as a bus driver in Rutherford County.
He was a Master Mason and member of Masonic Lodge 77 in Smithville, Tennessee.
He is survived by his wife, Gilda Wood Romer, sons, Lantz (Amy) Romer of Columbia, Bobby (Tillie) Romer of Nebraska, Andy (Fran) Romer of Pam Coast, Florida, David (Teresa) Romer of Lawrenceburg, Shaun (Belinda) Romer of Lawrenceburg, sister, Ann Marie McDonald of New York, 12 grandchildren, three great grandchildren, daughter-in-law: Linda Romer of Lawrencburg, niece and nephew, Jann Morton, Jay McDonald, one great niece, and one great
great niece. He was preceded in death by his brother, Louis Lantz and sister, Carol Lantz Shaffer.
Visitation will be from 4:00 until 8:00pm Monday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel, Murfreesboro. Funeral service will be 11:00 am Tuesday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel with Masonic Rites. Shaun Romer, Chris Madison, Family and Friends

Homer Wright
78 year old Homer Wright died Saturday at his residence in Smithville. He was a retired Principal from Gateway Elementary School in Nashville.He was a member of the Smithville Church of Christ and a disabled Navy veteran. The funeral will be Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Tim Woodward will officiate. Burial will be at DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Wilma Hibdon Hooper
85 year old Wilma Hibdon Hooper, a well known local businesswoman who was owner and operator of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home in Smithville for more than 50 years died Saturday at NHC of Smithville. Hooper was also a former owner of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home in McMinnville and she once owned a grocery store in the Smithville area for many years. She was also a member of the Banks Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
The funeral will be Monday at 5:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Junior Hibdon and E.H. Denman, Jr. will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Sunday from 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 5:00 p.m.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George Washington and Ada Genella Johnson Hibdon; her husband, Allen D. Hooper; and a brother, Junior Hibdon.

Michael E. Van Patten
49 year old Michael E. Van Patten of Binghamton, New York died Wednesday at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in New York. The funeral will be Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the J.F. Rice Funeral Home in New York. Elvin S. Murphy will officiate. Visitation will be Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until the service at 2:00 p.m. Van Patten was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Marlene Van Patten; and a sister, Nancy Van Patten. He was a well-known contractor for 33 years, having owned and operated Mike Van Patten Construction in Binghamton. He loved NASCAR racing, was a huge Dale Earnhart fan, and he enjoyed bowling. Mike would do anything for anyone who asked and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Survivors include his wife of 16 years, Dorothy Layton Van Patten of Binghamton. Children, Kristy “Chef” and husband James Aiken Smith of Saratoga Springs, New York and Steven “Bug” Arvin of Binghamton.
