65 year old Roy J. Evans of Lawrenceville, Georgia died Saturday. He was born in Smithville. Evans was a 1963 graduate of DeKalb County High School. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army having served in Vietnam and Germany, retired from General Motors and was a graduate of Brenau University. After retiring from General Motors he taught school in Walton County for several years. Evans was a long time member of Peachtree Road Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl G. and Era Cantrell Evans and two brothers, Frank A. (Chuck) Evans and Brown A. Evans. He is survived by his wife, Juanita McDaniel Evans of Lawrenceville, Georgia; a daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Jeff Howard of Dacula, Georgia; sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen and Nanci Evans of Loganville, Georgia and Nathan and Stephanie Evans of Loganville; a sister, Joyce Norred of Woodstock, Georgia; brothers, Dennis Evans of Sugar Hill, Georgia, Kenneth Evans of Norcross, Georgia, Dale Evans of Smithville, and Earl Evans of Milner, Georgia; grandchildren, Kyle Evans, Mitchell Howard, Taylor Evans, Lauren Howard and Cade Evans; several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Peachtree Road Baptist Church. Dr. Preston Moore, Reverend Scott Cramer and Dr. Steve Sparks will officiate. 85 year old Mildred Louise Vickers of Smithville died Sunday at NHC Healthcare Center in Smithville. She was a retired DeKalb County school teacher, a Methodist, a member of the Retired Teachers Association and the WAVES as a Navy Reserve in World War II. The funeral will be Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Virgil Hibdon, Jr. will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the service at 11:00 a.m. She was preceded in death by her parents, Noah David Britton, Sr. and Mabel Blakley Britton; her husband Clarence Vickers; a daughter, Elaine Allen; a grandson, James David Dye; a sister, Bobbye Price; and a brother, Noah Britton, Jr. She is survived by two daughters, Lisa Gilreath of Smithville and Marsha Penrod of Kentucky. 81 year old Billie Cooley Roller of McMinnville died Thursday of an extended illness at NHC of Smithville. She was a housewife and a member of the Church of Christ. The funeral will be Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at High Funeral Home in McMinnville. Mark Miller will officiate and burial will be in the Smyrna Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. until the service. Roller was preceded in death by her parents, James Martin and Betty Farless Cooley; her husband, Gene Roller; and brothers, Jerry L. and James Aubrey Cooley. 68 year old Howard Wilson Dickens of Brush Creek died Tuesday at Vanderbilt Hospital. He was born in Smith County. Dickens was a truck driver and a member of the Brush Creek Missionary Baptist Church. He also served in the U.S. Air Force from 1958 to 1962 and the Air National Guard from 1982 to 1990. The funeral will be Friday at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria. Kerry Dugan will officiate and burial will be in the Brush Creek Memorial Gardens. 72 year old Marlene Mae Van Patten of Dowelltown died Tuesday at her daughter’s residence. She was a retired factory worker. The family has chosen direct cremation and there will be no visitation or services held. She was preceded in death by her parents, Milo and Jessie McCoy Cary; her husband, Kenneth Van Patten; companion, Bob Ackley; and a daughter, Nancy Van Patten. She is survived by five children, Debbie and husband Jesus Suarez of Dowelltown, Cindy and husband Vic Loden of Rockwood, Bonnie and husband Floyd Cantrell of Smithville, Mike and wife Dorothy Van Patten of Binghamton, New York, and Kenny Van Patten of Rockwood. Grandchildren, Marlene Loden, Vicky Murphy, Chris Van Patten, Misty Loden, Tad Godsey, Debbie Lopez, Randal Cantrell, Kristi Alken, Steven Arvin, Juan Suarez, Kyle Van Patten, Dylan Caldwell, and Savanna Whitehead.
