Kathy Jean Lastinger age 62 of Smithville passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at her residence. She was born February 18, 1955 in Tomah, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her father, Mark Lastinger; 1 great-grandson, Aiden Michael Briley; 1 sister, Sandra Studder; 1 brother, Kevin Lastinger. She worked in nursing. Survivors include 3 children, Theresa Hatfield of Smithville, Michelle Crawford of Necedah, Wisconsin and Jeffery Hatfield of Smithville; 5 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; mother, Cora Jean Lastinger of Smithville; 2 brothers, Stephen Lastinger of Alabama and Johnny Lastinger of West Palm Beech, FL. The family has honored Kathy’s request to be cremated and there will be a Memorial Service held at a later date in Wisconsin. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Billy Smith
Billy Smith age 77 of Dowelltown passed away Thursday, March 2, 2017 at his residence. He was born January 24, 1940 to his parents, the late Lloyd Brown and Nancy Parlee Braswell Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Charlotte Davis; great-grandson, Dallas Davenport; brother, Jimmy Smith; niece, Penny Wilson. Mr. Bill was of the Baptist faith and was retired from the City of Smithville. Survivors include his wife, Frances Smith of Dowelltown; 7 children, Randy Smith of Woodbury, Tina Knowles of McMinnville, Henry “H.L.” Smith of Dowelltown, Angela (Troy) Bain of Smithville, Danny Ponder of Nashville, Gary and Jeff Ponder both of Smithville; 14 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 2 PM Sunday, March 5, 2017 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Michael Hale officiating and burial will follow in Blues Hill Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be on Saturday 2 PM until 8 PM and Sunday 10 AM until the time of the service at 2 PM. Stillborn infant Jonavon Kenneth Lee Johnson was silently born Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at St. Thomas River Park Hospital in McMinnville. Jonavon was preceded in death by grandfather, Kenneth Ray Murphy; great-great-grandmother, Wilma Jo Ferrell; uncle, Joshua Lee Murphy. He is survived by his mother, Lisa Darnail Johnson; grandmother, Tabatha Shantell Murphy; great-parents, Jo Frances and Rickey Lynn Martin, Sr.; great-great-grandfather, Ellis Rye Ferrell; uncles, Christopher Avery Johnson, Daniel Lynn Johnson, Buddy Lee Murphy and Issac Luther Martin; aunts, Frances Shantell Murphy and Samantha Jo Murphy; great-uncles, Ellis Dewayne Carlton; great-great-aunt, Darnette Ferrell Hibdon; several more family members and friends whom we love and cherish. John Toy Hayes age 81 of Smithville passed away Wednesday evening at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. He was born June 2, 1935 to his parents, the late John and Ella Jane Fuson Hayes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by infant daughter, Cuma Jane Hayes; infant son, Bill Hayes; 3 brothers, Alton, J.C. and Kenneth Hayes; 3 sisters, Nannie Mae Eastes, Irene Hayes and Frances Hayes and special friend, Robbie Johnson. He was a Pentecostal and worked in nursery business. Survivors include his daughter, Modena and husband Kenneth Johnson, Sr. of Smithville; 1 son, James and wife Kerrie Hayes of McMinnville; 5 grandchildren, Craig and wife Tara Rogers, Allison Rogers, Lauren Rogers, Kelsie Rogers, Breanna Hayes; great-grandchildren, Caden and Peyton Rogers; 1 brother, Harry Lee Hayes of Smithville; friend and caregiver, Carolyn Agee of Smithville; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 11:AM Saturday, March 4, 2017 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Michael Hale officiating. 69 year old Nancy Kay Moss Turley of Smithville died Tuesday at Curahealth Hospital in Nashville. She was a homemaker. The family has chosen direct cremation. There will be no visitation. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wallace and Esther Moss. Survivors include her husband, Jack Turley of Smithville. Two children, Michael Turley of Seymor and Melissa Cannon of Smithville. Two grandchildren, Calyn Stembridge and Stephen Jones. Two great grandchildren, Luke Stembridge and Eli Jordan. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Dennis Reeder
68 year old Dennis Reeder of Smithville died Tuesday at his residence. He was a retired carpenter. The funeral will be Friday at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. David Tramel will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Thursday from 2-8 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. until the service at 11 a.m. Reeder was preceded in death by his father, Hoss Reeder and two brothers, Ronnie Reeder and Jerry Anderson. Survivors include his wife, Ella Marie Reeder of Smithville. One son, Jason Reeder of Sparta. Two grandchildren, Jordan Lee and Dillion Cody Reeder of Smithville. One step daughter, Christina and Jackie Ervin of Smithville. Mother, Norene Anderson of Sparta. Several cousins also survive. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Hilda Dee Krill Meyers
Hilda Dee Krill Meyers, age 93, passed from this life into the loving arms of her Savior, Jesus Christ, on February 26, 2017. Born on April 28, 1923, she was preceded in death by her parents Edwin Carlton and Mabel Marjorie Gabriel Krill; sisters, Martha Jane Krill Pirtle, and Dorothy Lucille Krill Dunkle; brother, Carlton Jon Krill; father of her children, Merle C. Meyers; and daughter in-law, Trudie Lee Littlefield Meyers. She is survived by her son Jon and wife Megan Meyers, of Pittsburgh, PA; daughter, Jean Meyers of Smithville, TN; grandson Justin and wife Elizabeth Meyers, and great grandson, William Ross Meyers, of Downingtown, PA; sister Carolyn Joan Riehle of Edgerton, OH. She will be dearly missed by her beloved nieces and nephews, and extended family and friends, pets, and World Vision children. Hilda earned her Bachelors Degree from Bowling Green State University, and Masters Degree from Tennessee Tech University. She retired from the Dekalb County School System, where she was a kindergarten teacher, a Follow Through Program supervisor, and food services supervisor. She was a long time and active member of First United Methodist Church in Smithville, where she served as choir director, Sunday School teacher, youth leader, administrative board member, Counsel on Ministries and Worship committee member. Most important to Hilda was her Faith, Family and Friends and she lived her Life by the Golden Rule. Hilda also enjoyed gardening, reading, sewing and crafting. Hilda had a wonderful sense of humor, and will be dearly missed by all she touched. Visitation will be Friday the 3rd from Noon until 8PM and Saturday from 10am-12pm. Funeral will be held at First United Methodist Church at 1pm. Honorary pallbearers (any member of the 1964-67 Smithville Methodist Kindergarten Classes) are asked to meet at the funeral home at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. In addition to flowers the family has requested that donations be made to First United Methodist Church, TGA Scholarship Foundation, the DeKalb County Animal Coalition or any children’s charity.

Cynthia Diane Burrage age 41 of Smithville passed away Friday afternoon, February 24, 2017 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. She was born March 11, 1975. Cynthia was preceded in death by her adopted parents, Charles Wilson and Mable Mae Wilson Wallace; grandfather-in-law, J.T. Young. She was disabled and attended the Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Wesley Burrage of Smithville; 5 children, Natasha Burrage of Smithville, Tiffanie (Corey) Randolph of McMinnville, Dawn Burrage of Lafayette, Joseph Christopher of Alabama, and Thomas Burrage of Smithville; 1 step-daughter, Morgan Hendrix of South Pittsburg; 5 grandchildren, Corey, Carson and Mila Randolph, Bryson Hines and Addyson Burrage; mother, Kathy Hicks of Rock Island; father, Jimmy Bolen of West Virginia; sister, Laura Christopher of Alabama; mother-in-law, Shirley Burrage of Smithville; brother-in-law, Charles (Angel) Burrage of Smithville; nephew, Cody Burrage; grandmother-in-law, Mable Young of Smithville and other extended family and friends. 77 year old Willie Ruth Smith of McMinnville died Friday at St. Thomas Midtown. She was a Baptist and a Homemaker. The funeral will be Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Blues Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 a.m. until the service at 1 p.m. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Alice Wreinser Sanders; great grandchild Dallas Davenport; brothers, Robert and Marshall Sanders; and sisters, Geneva Hobbs and Dorothy Meyers. Survivors include daughters, Angela and Troy Bain and Tina Knowles and a son, Henry Smith all of Smithville. Mr. Stevie Mathis age 62 of Dowelltown passed away Friday morning at his son’s residence in Homestead, FL. He was born February 17, 1955 to his parents, the late J.C. and Martha Sammye Williams Mathis. Stevie attended the Cave Springs Missionary Baptist Church and was self-employed construction worker. Survivors include 1 son, Jarrad (Jamie) Mathis of Homestead, FL; 3 grandchildren, Samantha, Willie and Annabelle Mathis; 3 sisters, Bobbie Don (Billy) Curtis of Liberty, June Dodd of Liberty and Darlene Mathis of Dowelltown; 2 brothers, Dwight (Shirley) Mathis and Gary (Judy) Mathis both of Liberty; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Gary Caplinger officiating and burial to follow in Salem Cemetery.
