Jairon D. Spencer

67 year old Jairon D. Spencer of McMinnville died Thursday at his daughter’s residence. He was a member of the Church of Christ and a former employee of Goodyear, Vaughn Nursery, and Haley Nursery. The funeral will be Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Keith Young will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Saturday from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 2:00 p.m. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Dewey and Ocie Curtis Spencer. He is survived by daughters, Chancy and her husband Matthew Woodside of McMinnville and Marcy and her husband Joe Cherry of King George, Virginia. Grandchildren, Justice, Garrett, Kate, Joseph, Rebekah, Jonathan, and David. Sisters and brothers-in-law, Marjorie and husband Ray Terrell of Hermitage and Montie and husband Bass Estes of Smithville. Several nieces and nephews also survive. J.W. Pollard

75 year old J.W. Pollard of the Peeled Chestnut Community died Sunday at DeKalb Community Hospital. He was the former owner of BeeJay Apparel, Incorporated, Pollard Enterprises, Hummingbird Aircraft Charter Service, a partner in Sligo Boat Dock and FBO operator of the Sparta White County Airport and Pollard Farms. Pollard was a U.S. Army veteran and he attended the Smithville Church of God. The funeral will be Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Michael Farr and Robin Phillips will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.; Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.; and Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 1:00 p.m. He was preceded in death by his parents, James W. and Beulah Mosley Pollard, Sr.; his father and mother-in-law, Casto and Josie Puckett; sister-in-law, Donavee Puckett; brother-in-law, Glynn Webb; a nephew, Jeff Garrett; and a great nephew, Josiah Graden Kirksey. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Bettye Puckett Pollard of the Peeled Chestnut Community of DeKalb County. Brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Morris Puckett of Sparta, Marie Webb, Keith and Hilda Garrett, Jerry and Carolyn Tramel, and Gail Kirksey. Nieces, Nena Daily, Tina Puckett, and Martha Kirksey. Nephews, Scott and his wife Kelly Garrett, Todd and his wife Sharon Webb, Chris and his wife Bethany Tramel, Josh and his wife Leslie Tramel, and Graden and his wife Sabrina Kirksey. Mary Z. Jackson

96 year old Mary Z. Jackson of Lancaster died Wednesday morning at DeKalb Community Hospital. She was a Catholic and a homemaker. A graveside service will be Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Priest Jim Bretl will officiate. Visitation will be Friday from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. at which time the body will be taken to the cemetery for the graveside service. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence Jackson; a daughter, Nancy Jackson Wildmon; and brothers and sisters. She is survived by her son, Tom Jackson of the Dale Ridge Community; grandchildren, Debbie Wildmon Bell and Eric Wildman; great grandchildren, Astrid and Aylin Bell, Jacob and Ethan Wildmon; a nephew, Michael Zane and nieces, Barbara and Patty Drillion. Ruby Louise Martin Estes

68 year old Ruby Louise Martin Estes of the Cedar Grove community of Bedford County died Thursday. A native of DeKalb County, Estes was a daughter of the late John Hobert and Daisy Belle Clayborn Martin. She was a homemaker and attended Cedar Grove United Methodist Church. The funeral will be Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at Love – Cantrell Funeral Home in Smithville. Visitation at Love – Cantrell Funeral Home will be Sunday from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Burial will follow in Wood Cemetery at Short Mountain. Visitation Saturday will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Lawrence Funeral Home in Chapel Hill. She is survived by three daughters; Doris McCormick of McMinnville, Donna Fulton of Jamestown, and Gail Perryman of the Cedar Grove community of Bedford County. Six sisters; Ginger Steinbeck of Smithville, Peggy Smith of Nashville, Carolyn Sanders of Henderson, TX, Nadine Ferrell of Woodbury, Jimmy Earl Beecham of Smithville, and Lois Hale of Lebanon. Gladys Cantrell Braswell

93 year old Gladys Cantrell Braswell of Smithville died Thursday morning at DeKalb Community Hospital. She was a member of the Smithville First Baptist Church for 71 years. Braswell was also retired from Val-Dor shirt factory. The funeral will be Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Smithville First Baptist Church. Mark Bass, Ray Ridgeway, and Bill Palmitter will officiate and burial will be in Whorton Springs Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 1:00 p.m. at the church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Minnie Tramel Cantrell; her husband, Matthew Allen Braswell, Jr.; an infant son, Donald Allen Braswell; brothers, Dewey Cantrell and Lonnie Cantrell; and sisters, Mertie Curtis, Lillie Cantrell, and Dorcas West. She is survived by children, Mike Braswell of Smithville, and Donna Braswell and Phyllis Braswell Frost both of Murfreesboro. A grandson, Charles David Frost, Jr. of Murfreesboro. 81 year old Winfred T. Turner of Smithville died Friday at DeKalb Community Hospital. He was a retired maintenance worker from Vanderbilt Hospital and a member of the Mount Hope The Baptist Church. The funeral will be Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Dwight Knowles will officiate and burial will be in the Indian Mound Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Naomi West Turner; three brothers, Orville Lee, Gent, and Rob Turner; a son. Winfred Dwayne Turner; and a grandchild, Angela O’Neal. He is survived by his wife, Elsie Waldron Turner of Smithville. A daughter, Shirley Norris and husband David Eldridge of Cookeville. Two step-daughters, Diane and husband Rayford Seales of Kentucky and Debbie Smith Embree of Nashville. One step-son, Mark and his wife Connie Smith of Murfreesboro. Courtney Kristin Pirtle

22 year old Courtney Kristin Pirtle of Smithville died Tuesday at DeKalb Community Hospital. She was a secretary at Pirtle’s Nursery and a member of the Church of the Nazarene. The funeral will be Friday at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Trent Colwell and Rannie Phillips will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, John B. and Nell Hobbs Judkins. She is survived by her parents, Danny and Melissa Judkins Pirtle; a sister, Trista Pirtle; a brother, Danny Pirtle, Jr.; and her paternal grandparents, James and Ruth Houk Pirtle all of Smithville. Four aunts, Judy and husband Ronnie Hale, Faye Cook, and Janie and husband Paul Armstrong all of Smithville, and Debbie and husband Rannie Phillips of Woodbury. One uncle, John and his wife Barbara Anderson of Georgia. One special friend, Jamie Tuttenburg of Smithville. Several cousins and extended family also survive. Harrison Donel “Toostie” Cook

80 year old Harrison Donel “Toostie” Cook of Smithville died Sunday at DeKalb Community Hospital. He was a member of the Salem Baptist Church, the U.S. Air Force, and the Boilermakers Union #454. He was also a retired construction worker. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Mike Carpenter and Michael Hale will officiate and burial will be in Salem Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 2:00 p.m. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vester and Minnie Hall Cook; and brothers, Flossie B. Cook and Hoyte Cook. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Geraldine Hendrixson Cook of Smithville. Children, Gloria and her husband Steve Corbin of Lynchburg and Don M. and his wife Sandy Cook of Tullahoma. Step-son, Mike and his wife Melody Hendrixson of Florida. 61 year old Billy Joe Cowan of McMinnville died Friday at his residence of an extended illness. He was a factory worker and a member of the Methodist Church. The funeral will be Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Love-Cantrell & Cope Funeral Home in McMinnville. Greg Hibdon will officiate and burial will be in Whorton Springs Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Sunday from 8:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver B. and Erma C. Courtney Cowan. Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Bianne and John Pennington of McMinnville. Two nieces and their husbands, Katrina Pennington and Rusty Thompson and Regenia Pennington and John Rovsek all of Atlanta, Georgia. Two great nieces, Abigail Thompson and Hannah Grace Rovsek. The funeral for 93 year old James Edward LaFever (better known as Ed LaFever) will be Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Baxter Funeral Home. Burial will be in the LaFever Cemetery.
