Jewel Medley

88 year old Jewel Medley of Smithville died Friday at DeKalb Community Hospital. She was a member of the Smithville Cumberland Presbyterian Church and a member of the Retired Teacher’s Association. Medley was a school teacher for 32 years. The funeral will be Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. E.H. Denman and Larry Green will officiate and burial will be in Whorton Springs Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from noon until 8:00 p.m. and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 3:00 p.m. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Elizabeth Hooper Young; a sister, Jimmie Dell; and a step-brother, Larry Joe Young. She is survived by her husband, Clyde Medley of Smithville. A son, Nelson and his wife Fay Gilreath of Smithville. A granddaughter, Tarron and her husband, Bobby Huddleston of Norene. A great grandson, Colby Huddleston. Step grandchildren,Shane Cook, Nathan Cook, and Darrell Adcock. Step great grandchildren, Heath Daughtery, Quentin Cook, Taylor Cook, Ali Adcock, and B.J. Adcock. Her step-mother, Martha Spencer of Dowelltown. Half- sisters, Retha Nell Braswell of Dowelltown and Dixie Faye Greer of Smithville. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Loretta Marie Watson

79 year old Loretta Marie Watson of McMinnville died Saturday at her residence in Warren County. She was retired from Smithville Shirt Factory where she worked as a seamstress. Watson was also a member of the Banks Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The funeral will be Monday at 3:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Virgil Hibdon, Jr. and Greg Hibdon will officiate and burial will be in the Banks Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 3:00 p.m. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Clara Myrtle Jones Bratcher; her husband, John Watson; a brother, Paul Bratcher; and a sister, Rose Bivens. One grandson, Barry Melton. Survivors include three daughters, Patsy Helton of McMinnville, Rose and her husband Leonard Melton of Smithville, and Barbara and her husband Virgil Hibdon, Jr. of McMinnville. One son, Charles and his wife Carisa Watson of McMinnville. Seven grandchildren, Toni Herdman, Tina Helton, Brad Melton and his wife Jessica, Greg Hibdon and his wife Cheryl, Angela Brown and her husband Danny all of McMinnville, Crystal Waldron and her husband Dave of Murfreesboro, John Helton and his wife Tonya of Indiana. Seven great grandchildren, Brandi and Brook Herdman and Katy Helton all of Indiana, Matthew Hibdon, Brady and Baler Melton, and Alex and Abigail Brown all of McMinnville and William Waldron of Murfreesboro. One great great granddaughter, Ambria Leedy of Indiana. Several nieces and nephews and a host of friends as well as one special niece, Ernesteen Cantrell. William “Bill” Cantrell

70 year old William “Bill” Cantrell of Smithville died Thursday at the emergency room of DeKalb Community Hospital. He was a member of the Philippi Church of Christ, a U.S. Army veteran, and he was the owner of Republic Insurance of Smithville. The funeral will be Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the Burton-Ponder Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 1:00 p.m. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Beulah Ponder Cantrell; a sister, Jessie Nell Conley; a brother, Lawrence P. Cantrell; and a step-son, Christopher Jon Hillebrand. He is survived by his wife, Jane Scarlett Cantrell of Smithville. Children, William Edward Cantrell II and Nathan Cantrell both of Smithville, and Julia Cantrell of Cookeville. A step-son, Theodore Hillebrand of Virginia. A grandchild, Chloe Cantrell. Annie Idell Hooper-Spann

83 year old Annie Idell Hooper-Spann of Smithville died Thursday at DeKalb Community Hospital. She was a retired Librarian, a member of the Smithville Church of Christ, the Smithville Study Club and the Smithville Business and Professional Women’s Club, and she helped organize blood drives. The funeral will be Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Dan Gulley and Tim Woodward will officiate and burial will be in the Cannady Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 2:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Sunday from noon until the service at 2:00 p.m. She was preceded in death by her parents, Benton and Ruth Johnson Hooper. Survivors include two sisters, Jewell Ellis of Florida and June Condrey of Virginia. Seven nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Pam Ball all of Smithville. W.C. Crook

84 year old W.C. Crook of Smithville died Wednesday at NHC Healthcare Center. He was a member of the Smithville First Baptist Church, a U.S. Navy Veteran, having served in World War II, a Mason at Liberty Lodge, and he was a retired salesman at the American Battery Company. The funeral will be Friday at 2:00 p.m. at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Justin Terrell will officiate and burial will be in Salem Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Friday from noon until the service at 2:00 p.m. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ewing Monroe and Jenny Alta Pittman Crook; sisters, Ruby Jim Skinner and Frances Jennings; and his first wife, Autrey Clayton Crook. Survivors include his wife, Doris Terrell Crook of Smithville. Children, Bettye Crook, Jerry and his wife Brenda Crook, Mitzi Ann and her husband Sammy Taylor all of Smithville, Penny Lou and her husband Jay Youngblood of Lascassas. Step-children, David and his wife Vicky Terrell of Smithville and Terry Terrell of Chattanooga. Frances Adcock

92 year old Frances Adcock of Smithville died Monday at NHC Healthcare Center. She was a member of the Smithville First United Methodist Church, where she was active at the Wednesday morning prayer service. She was also a retired sales clerk at different department stores. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Rev. Terry Little will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford “Hoogan” Adcock; a son, Wayne Adcock; parents, W.L. “Dock” and Edna Summers Ferrell; sisters, Grace Webb and Myra Jones; and brothers, Ray, Robert, and Willie Ferrell. She is survived by a son, Ken and his wife Charlotte Adcock of Cleveland. A daughter-in-law, Judy Adcock of Livingston. Grandchildren, Ken Adcock, Jr and his wife Walailux of Georgia; Jonathan and his wife Anissa Adcock of Ooltewah, Amellia and her husband Richard Melton of Livingston, and Valerie and her husband Chris Boothe of Mississippi. Lorene W. Patton

84 year old Lorene W. Patton of Watertown died Sunday at the Quality Care Health Center in Lebanon. She was born in DeKalb County and was a member of the Ramah Baptist Church. She was also a seamstress at Hartmann Luggage. The funeral will be Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at Hunter Funeral Home in Watertown. Stan Edwards will officiate and burial will be in the Wilson County Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard D. Patton; a son, Boyd Lee Taylor; her father, Thurston Walls; her mother, Josephine Atnip; and three brothers and three sisters. Survivors include a daughter, Sharon and her husband George Widuch of Hermitage. A son, Jerry and his wife Glenda Taylor of Watertown. Grandchildren, Jeff Taylor and Whitney and her husband Tony Parsley all of Watertown, Rachel and her husband Scott Cothran of Nashville, Daryl and his wife Tammy Taylor of Lebanon, Dewayne Taylor of Boaz, Alabama, Carla and her husband Dale Hollis Taylor of Watertown, and Vicky Taylor of Nashville. Ten great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren survive along with two brothers, Jimmy and his wife Jo Dean Atnip of Watertown and Junior Atnip of Smithville. Sadie Lucille Maynard

The funeral for 95 year old Sadie Lucille Maynard of Baxter will be Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at the Baxter Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston, & Horner Funeral Home. Freddie Copeland and David Lee England will officiate and burial will be in the Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sparta. She died Saturday at Bethesda Health Care Center in Cookeville. She was born in Smith County to the late James “JLM” Edward and Kizzie Jane Starnes Williams. She was a homemaker and grew up in the Lancaster Community of Smith County. She lived for many years in White County and attended the Liberty Baptist Church. She moved to Baxter in 1988. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alfice Maynard; a brother; Charlie Williams; sisters, Clara Holman, Willie Mae Williams, Grace Neal, and Lois Alcorn. She is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Deane and Ray Killebrew of Cookeville and a host of nieces and nephews. James Loyd Hyder Sr

Funeral services for 69 year old James Loyd Hyder Sr. of Cookeville will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Putnam County. Dr. Charles McCaskey and Denman Frazier will officiate the services. Burial with military honors will follow in Cookeville Cemetery. Family will receive friends Thursday, Sept. 11, from 4-8 p.m. and Friday, Sept. 12, from 11 a.m. until time of services at the church. Hyder died Tuesday at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. His family includes his wife of 51 years, Evelyn Ward Hyder of Cookeville; a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Emily Hyder of Smyrna; a daughter, Suzie Hyder of Mt. Juliet; two grandsons, Aaron and Cody Hyder, both of Smyrna; his stepfather, A.P. McClain; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Wayne and Levita McClain and Johnny McClain, all of Cookeville; and four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Pat and Arvis Lee, Linda and Eddie Thompson, Debbie and Steve London and Cathy McClain, all of Cookeville. 76 year old James Ted Donnell of Smithville died Monday night at DeKalb Community Hospital. He was retired from the U.S. Army and National Guard and a member of the Westwood Church of Christ. The funeral will be Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Bill Palmiter will officiate and burial will be in Whorton Springs Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Lucy Ware Donnell.
