78 year old Alma Dean Henley of Alexandria, a retired employee of Workwear Manufacturing died Thursday at Middle Tennessee Medical Center in Murfreesboro. She was a DeKalb County native and a graduate of Liberty High School. She was a lifelong member of the Baptist Church. The funeral will be Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Hunter Funeral Home in Watertown. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. until the service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Boyd Henley; her parents, Eliga and Nonnie Moore Malone; brothers, Jerry, Hubert, and George F. Malone; and a niece, Kathy Marler. Survivors include brothers, Tommy and his wife Linda Malone of Woodbury and Eddie and his wife Patty Malone of Smithville. Sisters, Roberta and her husband Robert Robinson of Liberty, Annie and her husband Jack Campbell of Liberty, and Mainell and her husband Joe Foutch of Liberty. John Steinbach
35 year old John Steinbach of Smithville died Monday at his residence. He was a nursery worker. Family and friends will meet Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Corinth Cemetery for a graveside service at 11:00 a.m.. Teddy Cagle will officiate. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred John and Elsie Mae Green Steinbach; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Percy Pinegar III and Shanna Pinegar; and a great nephew, Jordon Steinbach. Survivors include his wife, Jessica Steinbach of Smithville. Children, Mikey and Kelsey Steinbach of Smithville. Special niece, Katlyn Pinegar of Smithville. A brother, Richard Steinbach of Smithville. Sisters, Beverly and her husband Terry Risgby of Columbia and Kathy and her husband Kenny Wright of Smithville. Paul Lewis Hardiman
80 year old Paul Lewis Hardiman of Smithville died Monday at his residence. He attended the Smithville United Methodist Church. Mr. Hardiman’s remains have been cremated. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the Smithville First Uited Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Maplewood Cemetery in Pulaski on Monday, September 1st at 11:30 a.m. Dr. John Purdue will orfficiate. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Hester and Helen Monroe Roberson Hardiman; and a brother, Bill Hardiman. Survivors include his wife, Betty Jo Hardiman of Smithville. A son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Betty Hardiman of North Carolina. Daughters, Lynn Hardiman of Texas, Leigh Hardiman and spouse, Peter Mostow of Washington; Harriet Hardiman and spouse, Doug Musgrove of Oregon, and Leslie Hardiman and spouse, Doug Sams of Oregon; Grandchildren, Harris Hardiman Mostow and Rhys Hardiman Mostow; a brother and his wife John and Martha Hardiman of Alabama. 87 year old Jewel Young of McMinnville died suddenly Sunday at DeKalb Community Hospital. She was a retired employee of Levi’s and a Baptist. The funeral will be Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel of High Funeral Home in McMinnville. Family members will officiate and burial will be in the Old Bybee Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the service. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Mary Edmonds; her husband, Firman Edward Young; and a son, Ed Young. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Jean Young of Billings, Montana. Two daughters and a son-in-law, Janice and Jerry Womack and Joan Bozeman all of McMinnville. Another daughter-in-law, Wilma Jean Young of McMinnville. 79 year old Aubrey F. Greer of McMinnville died Thursday at River Park Hospital of an extended illness. He worked as a police officer for 33 years for the City of McMinnville. He was also a farmer and a member of the Indian Creek Baptist Church. The funeral will be Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Love-Cantrell & Cope Funeral Home in McMinnville. Carl Smith and Jackie Matheny will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Ruth Mullican Greer; parents, Floyd N. Greer and Lula Ann Waller Greer Davenport; and step-father, Irvin Davenport. Survivors include a son, Gene Greer of McMinnville. A sister, Robbie D. Walker of Smartt Station. Four grandchildren, Nathan and his wife Tess Greer of Rock Island, Ryan and his wife Kayla Renee Greer of McMinnville, Joshua Greer of McMinnville, and Kayla Ruth Ann Greer of McMinnville. Two great grandchildren, Logan Greer and Hallie Greer of Rock Island. The family will receive friends Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
Betty Lou Lankford Phillips
69 year old Betty Lou Lankford Phillips of Brush Creek died Monday at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville. She was born in Defeated, Tennessee in Smith County, the daughter of the late Louova Craighead and Sealous Opral Lankford. She was married to Robert Doyle Phillips, who preceded her in death. A son, James Robert Phillips, also preceded her in death. She worked at the Alexandria Garment Plant and was a member of the Mount View Primitive Baptist Church in Smithville. The body is at Avant Funeral Home in Alexandria, where the funeral will be Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Paul Violet will officiate and burial will be in the Brush Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the service at 2:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Mount View Primitive Baptist Church. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Barbara Phillips of Carthage and William and Donna Phillips of Brush Creek. Grandchildren, Jonah Phillips and Carly Phillips both of BrushCreek. Step grandchildren, Rodney, Nelson, and Tanya LaPointe of Canada and Chris LaPointe of Brush Creek. Four brothers, Jack and his wife Carolyn Lankford, Neal and his wife Linda Lankford, Ebbie and his wife Cheryl Lankford, and Junior and his wife Anita Lankford. Emmy Karoline Eaton
Emmy Karoline Eaton, 21 day old infant daughter of Hugh and Shalyn Eaton of Smithville, died Wednesday at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in Nashville. A graveside service will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. at DeKalb Cemetery. Dave Carden will officiate. Visitation will be Thursday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 1:45 p.m. when the family will go to the cemetery for the service. In addition to the parents, the child is survived by grandparents, Larry and Lynn Eaton of Smithville, Starla Hash of Smithville, and Paul Jelskis of Lakeland, Florida. Great grandmothers, Rubbie Carter and Roberta Hash of Smithville. Aunts, Shara Cowan of Smithville and Sharlee Rymer of McMinnville. Several cousins also survive. 77 year old Matty Frances Cantrell of Smithville died Wednesday at her residence. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 374 for 50 years. She was a Worthy Grand Matron and was selected to serve as Worthy Grand Ruth for the Tennessee Grand Chapter in Nashville. The funeral will be Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Mark Pafford and John Purdue will officiate and burial will be in the Whorton Springs Cemetery. A public Eastern Star service will be held Friday at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from noon until the time of the service at 1:00 p.m. She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Cantrell and parents, Clifton B. and Jodie White Cantrell. Survivors include a daughter, Gail C. Poss of Smithville. A granddaughter, Michelle Poss and her husband Clifton B. Sobel, Jr. of Murfreesboro. The First United Methodist Church Wednesday morning prayer group and Friendship Sunday School Class will be the honorary pallbearers.
John E. Dorton
85 year old John E. Dorton of Smithville died Wednesday at DeKalb Community Hospital. He was a member of the Church of Christ and a World War II veteran having served in the 6th Armored Division of Patton’s 3rd Army. He was also a retired foreman at Genesco. A graveside service will be Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Nickell Memorial Park Cemetery in Centerville. Dan Gulley will officiate. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Marie Luther Dorton. He is survived by daughters, Kay Dorton of Nashville; Ann and her husband Frank Hayes of Grass Valley, California; and Tina Denise Dorton of Smithville. Five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and sisters, Mary W. Duncan of Camden and Jean Larkins of Burns, Tennessee. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Virginia Elberta Christian
88 year old Virginia Elberta Christian of Woodbury, and formerly of California, died Tuesday at NHC Healthcare of Smithville. She was a housewife and a Baptist. She was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Wyatte Christian; one son, Dayle Christian; a daughter, Gayle Gottschall; her parents, Albert Ray and Josaphine Fullington Roberts, and brothers and sisters. The body has been cremated. A memorial service will be held on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at her daughter’s home in Woodbury. Also, there will be a memorial service with burial of the remains in the Memorial Gardens in Napa Valley, California, at a later date. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and William “Shorty” Kellerman of Woodbury. One son, Darold Christian of Bakersfield, CA. Nine grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren and eighteen great-great grandchildren also survive along with one sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Russ Beasley of Richmond, Missouri.
