Nina Reeder Phillips

66 year old Nina Reeder Phillips of Smithville died Wednesday at her residence. She was a homemaker and a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church. The funeral will be Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Royce Martin and Josh Phillips will officiate and burial will be in the Bethel Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the service at 1:00 p.m. She was preceded in death by her mother, Vada Irene Reeder. Survivors include her husband of 49 years, William “Bill” Phillips of Smithville. Two sons, Randall and his wife Amelia Phillips and Marty and his wife Teresa Phillips all of Smithville. Two grandchildren, Josh Phillips of Nashville and Heath Phillips of Smithville. Four sisters-in-law, Norma Gunter, Mary Cantrell, and Jane Eller all of Smithville, and Faye Walker of McMinnville. Many nieces, nephews, and cousins survive along with two special friends, Joel Dawes and Joyce Robinson. Love-Cantrell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Hilda Ray Patrick

87 year old Hilda Ray Patrick of Smithville died Tuesday at DeKalb Community Hospital. She was a homemaker, a member of the Smithville First United Methodist Church, and the American Legion and Woodsmen of the World. She also supported her husband’s military career all over the world for 30 years. The funeral will be Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia on September 11th at 9:00 a.m. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Friday from 11:00 a.m. until the service at 2:00 p.m. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie Aaron and Lillie Adcock Odom; two sisters, Ova Mai Vaughn and Dean Ceiszko; two brothers, Gentry and Elgard Odom and a daughter-in-law, Caryn Patrick. Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Robert “Bill” Patrick of Smithville. A son, Richard Patrick of Texas. A granddaughter, Robin and Brian Patrick of Texas. Two sisters, Nona Dell Wheeler of Florida and Jean and Edwin Andereck of Cookeville. Three sisters-in-law, Dorthy Odom of Smithville, Margaret Ellen Thieme and Grace Louise Patrick both of California. One brother-in-law, Michael Allen Patrick of Arkansas. Luther W. Cantrell

87 year old Luther W. Cantrell of Smithville died Tuesday morning at DeKalb Community Hospital of an extended illness. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, a member of the VFW and International Union Operators of Engineers Local 197, and he was retired from TVA and a retired night watchman for the City of Smithville. The funeral will be Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Michael Hale will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.; Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.; and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nathan and Emma Sullens Cantrell; brothers, James Nathan “Goodle” Cantrell, Bethel Magness “Doc” Cantrell, and John Clifford “Sy” Cantrell; and sisters, Rachel and Thelma Cantrell. Survivors include his wife, Helen Fay Cantrell of Smithville; 2 sons, Wesley Cantrell of Murfreesboro; Bradley Cantrell of Miami, Florida; 1 grandson, Chad Cantrell and 1 great grandson. Bertha Rose McCullough

71 year old Bertha Rose McCullough of Alexandria died Saturday at the home of her daughter in Lebanon. She was a DeKalb County native and was retired from Wynns Precision where she worked for 28 years. She was also a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church. The funeral will be Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. at Hunter Funeral Home in Watertown. Donald Owens will officiate and burial will be in the Flatwood Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. She was preceded in death by her parents, John William Garrison and Nannie Clara Watson Garrison; her husband, Ed Carson McCullough; a son, Jackie Grandstaff; a brother, James Garrison; and a sister, Elsie Mae McGregor. Survivors include four children, Debbie and her husband Gary Jones, John and his wife Darlene McCullough, and Susan and her husband Nathan Cox all of Lebanon, and Phil and his wife Alice McCullough of Florida. Nine grandchildren, Gary Jones, Jr. and Melanie Jones, Dusty and Luke McCullough, Mike and Rachel Smith, and Kelly, Katlyn, and P.J. McCullough. George Tramel

96 year old George Tramel of Dowelltown died Sunday at his residence. He was a farmer and a member of the Gospel Light House Baptist Church. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Snow Hill Baptist Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until the service at 2:00 p.m. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Gocie Cassity Tramel; two brothers, Troy Tramel and Johnny Shade Tramel; and a sister, Bessie Tramel. Survivors include his wife, Robbie Hale Tramel of Dowelltown. Two daughters, Georgia and her husband Michael Young and Martha and her husband Tim Cantrell; and one grandson, Nelson Young all of Dowelltown. Three granddaughters, Latonya and Dylan Kleparek of Smithville, Dana Cantrell and Ashley Young both of Dowelltown. Thurman Ray “Jack” Jones

76 year old Thurman Ray “Jack” Jones of McMinnville died Friday at Baptist Hospital in Nashville. He was born in DeKalb County. Jones was one of the original owners of McMinnville Funeral Home and was still serving the public at the time of his death. Jones was a previous chief of the Warren County Rescue Squad and a former coroner of Warren County. He served as a Warren County Commissioner for many years and he owned and operated a burlap business, a grave digging service, and C & N Machine Shop, where he worked as a welder. Jones was also a member of the Cornerstone Baptist Church and the Warren Masonic Lodge #125. The funeral will be Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of McMinnville Funeral Home. Phillip Rowland, Jackie Matheny, and Eddie Ware will officiate and burial will be in the Mount View Cemetery. A Masonic service will be held at the funeral home on Sunday evening at 5:00 p.m.. The Jones family will receive friends from noon until 9:00 p.m. on Sunday and again on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Jones was preceded in death by his parents, William Daniel and Margaret France Jones; brothers, Alec, Walter, Cephas, Tommy, Willie, Acquilla, and Burgess Jones; sisters, Gillie Allen, Florence Humphrey, Annie Mannon, Mary Jones, Percilla Warren, Pelina Marsh, Vina Turner, and America Turner. Leon C. Duke

90 year old Leon C. Duke of Lancaster died Friday at NHC of Smithville. He was retired from TRW and was a member of the Emmanuel Church of Christ. In 1994, he recorded “Old Time Banjo Rapping” music for the archives in the Country Music Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Cove Hollow Boys, a musician at the Dollywood Amusement Park, a past winner for two years of the “Old Time Banjo” competition at the Smithville Fiddler’s Jamboree, and a past winner of the harmonica competition at Uncle Dave Macon Days in Murfreesboro. The funeral will be Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Burial will be in Whorton Springs Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the service at 11:00 a.m. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lena Mae Bates Duke; his parents, Homer and Beulah Putty Duke; and a brother, Odell Duke. Gladys White Young Morris

78 year old Gladys White Young Morris of Woodbury died Wednesday at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga of a short illness. She was a Cannon County native, a retired seamstress, a member of the Sunny Slope and Sugar Tree Knob Church of Christ, and a past board director and member of the Cannon County Walking Horse Association. The funeral will be Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Woodbury Church of Christ. Herb Alsup and James McDonald will officiate and burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be after 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Woodbury Funeral Home and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Woodbury Church of Christ. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Curtis Morris of Woodbury. One son, Donnie Morris of Woodbury. One daughter, Renita Haley of Woodbury. 73 year old Dorothy M. Davis of Smithville died Thursday at her residence. She was a Pentecostal and a cook at Neo’s. The funeral will be Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Robert Presley will officiate and burial will be in the Gunter-Grizzle Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.; Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.; and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. She was preceded in death by her parents, Evert and Minnie Bell Bain Lawson; a daughter, Donna Moore; two brothers, Jewell Lawson and Limmie Lawson; a half-brother, Carlon Matheny; three sisters, Susie Farris, Emmie Farless, Thelma Herman; and a half-sister, Clara Mai Caldwell. She is survived by her husband, Robert Lee Davis of Smithville. Three daughters, Joyce Farless of Tullahoma, Judy and her husband Jerry Fish of Smithville, and Bobbie Todd of Smithville. One son, Ricky and his wife Jama Todd of Smithville. Six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild survive along with two brothers, Charlie and his wife Shirley Matheny of Nashville and Toy and his wife Faye Lawson of Liberty. Several nieces and nephews survive in addition to three step-daughters, Tammy and her husband Mark Eby of Rocky Mountain, North Carolina, Shalane Davis of Florida, Mary and her husband Steven Penticost of Charlotte, Tennessee. 80 year old Wilma Ray Shockley Luna of McMinnville died Thursday at NHC Healthcare of McMinnville of an extended illness. She was a homemaker and a native of Van Buren County. The funeral will be Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at the Indian Mound The Baptist Church, where she was a member. Glenn Love will officiate and burial will be in the Indian Mound Cemetery in DeKalb County. Visitation will be Friday from 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at High Funeral Home in McMinnville. She was preceded in death by her parents, David Ray and Edna Mae Mills Shockley; her husband, Waymon Edgar Luna; a brother, Charles Shockley; sisters, Evelyn Womack and Florencene Johnson; and a grandson, Corey Luna. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Janis and Bill Darnaby and Webb and Sandy Luna all of McMinnville, and Sandra and Gary Rankin of Maryville. Six grandchildren, Lamar Bain, Blair Harbin, and Blaine Luna all of McMinnville, John Tucker Rankin, Addie Rankin, and Zeke Rankin all of Maryville.
