93 year old Vernie Mae Comfort of Smithville died Wednesday at her residence. She was a member of the Methodist Church and a homemaker. The funeral will be Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Donnie Kelly and Tim Woodward will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Friday from 1:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. She was preceded in death by her parents, George Washington and Callie Bell Keaton Byford; her husband, William A. Comfort; two sisters, and four brothers. Survivors include four children, Billy and his wife Goldie Comfort of New Jersey, Jerry Comfort, Carolyn and her husband Earl Dyer, and Barbara Comfort all of Smithville. Two grandchildren, Charlotte Malone and special friend Saprena Cooley of Smithville and David and his wife Linda Comfort of New Jersey. One step-grandson, Earl Dyer, Jr. and his wife Amy of Smithville. One sister, Georgie Rhea and her husband Edwin Owens of Smithville. Two brothers, James Solon Byford of Kingsport and Willie Owen Byford of Morrison. Several nieces and nephews also survive. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

76 year old Edna Inez Pack of Smithville died Wednesday at DeKalb Community Hospital. She was a homemaker and a member of the Pomeroy Chapel Baptist Church. The funeral will be Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. She was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Lillie Colwell Petty; her husband, Joe Pack; and a step-son, Johnny Pack. Survivors include two step-sons, Wayne and his wife Regina Pack of Smithville and Jimbo and his wife Kim Pack of Smithville. One step-daughter, Janice and her husband Scott Towers of Smithville. Seven step-grandchildren and six step great grandchildren. 67 year old Jeanette Ellis Fields of New Hope Road, Alexandria died Wednesday at Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville. The funeral will be Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Avant Funeral Home. Perry Clayton will officiate and burial will be in the Pisgah Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Jim Fields of Alexandria. Four daughters, Pam Fields Dillard and her husband Mark of Alexandria; Arlene Fields Davis and her husband Bob of Vidalia, Georgia; Sonya Fields of Lebanon; and Jimmie Fields Alvis and her husband Mark of Brush Creek. Five grandchildren, Clint Johnson and his wife Deddiee, Lance Dillard and his wife Courtney, Brooke Bogle, Peyton Harper, and Brittney Alvis. Two great grandchildren, Ellie Dillard and Davis Scott. A brother, Elmer Ellis, Jr. of Alexandria. Two sisters, Georgie Willoughby and Mildred Clayborn both of Alexandria. Avant Funeral Home in Alexandria is in charge of the arrangements. 81 year old Harriet Annette Estes of Smithville died Tuesday at Heartland Nursing Home in South Carolina. She was a homemaker and a member of the Smithville Church of God. The funeral will be Friday at 10:00 a.m. at the Smithville Church of God. Donnie Kelly will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gustav Ingvold and Inga Swenson Haaland; three brothers, Phillip, Gust, and Ingvold Haaland; three sisters, Inga Lehne, Gladys Williams, and Hjordis Riggio; and a grandson, Stephen Estes. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Randy Caplinger of Smithville. Two sons, Roy, Jr. and his wife Dottie Estes of Minnesota and Mark and his wife Patricia Estes of South Carolina. Two step-sons, Jim and Bill Estes of Morristown. Seven grandchildren, Shawn and Cory Caplinger of Smithville, Jennifer and Rachel Estes and Kimberly Burke all of Minnesota and Deborah and Anna Estes of South Carolina. Two great grandchildren. 96 year old Walter Vandagriff of the Dry Creek Community died Tuesday of an extended illness at DeKalb Community Hospital. He was a farmer and a member and longtime Deacon of the Dowelltown Baptist Church. The funeral will be Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Dowelltown Baptist Church. Burial will be in Salem Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at which time the body will be taken to the church where it will be from 1:00 p.m. until the service at 2:00 p.m. He was preceded in death by his parents, Will and Nola Ford Vandergriff; his wife, Pauline Yates Vandergriff; a brother, Valter Vandergriff; and a sister, Lois Vandergriff. Survivors include five children, Nelda Burklow and Douglas Vandergriff of Smithville, Wayne Vandergriff of LaGrange, Kentucky, Carolyn Mullinax, and Debra Rowland of Liberty. Two sisters, Nola Vandergriff of Smithville, Pauline Moon of Chattanooga. Eleven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

85 year old Hattie Ethel Bogle Byford of McMinnville died Saturday at Stones River Hospital in Woodbury of an extended illness. She was a Cannon County native, a homemaker, a retired employee of Val Dor, and a member of the Short Mountain Church of God. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Woodbury Funeral Home. Charles Richey will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Monday from 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Sarah Ferrell Bogle; her husband Marlin Byford, and her son-in-law, H.A. Foster. Survivors include three sons, Glenn and his wife Betty Byford, Carl Byford, and Donald Byford all of McMinnville. Four daughters, Faye Byford of McMinnville, Wilma Foster of Woodbury, Sybil and her husband David Gunter of McMinnville and Sue and her husband Phillip Close of Smithville. Two brothers, Robert Bogle of Woodbury and Hoyte Bogle of Akron, Ohio. Thirteen grandchildren, two step grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren also survive along with several nieces and nephews. Woodbury Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

66 year old Dorothy Cantrell Roman of Smithville died Friday at her residence. She was a homemaker and a member of the Kingdom of Jesus Church. The funeral will be Monday at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Burial will be in DeKalb Cemetery. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gentry Cantrell and Velvo Arnold Thrasher; a sister, Freda Hobbs; and three brothers, Eddie, T.J., and Albert Cantrell. Survivors include her husband, Ramon Roman. Three sons, Rickey and his wife Doreen Reece, Nickey and his wife Remega Reece, and Arthur Dawson, Jr. all of Smithville. A daughter, Vickie Lopez of McMinnville. Fourteen grandchildren, twenty two great grandchildren. Five sisters, Cleta Horn, Omega Sue Sanders both of Smithville, and Imogene Crook of Liberty, and Betty Ann Vanzini and Christine Todd both of California.
