92 year old Lieutenant Colonel Glen L. Nichols, Sr., U.S. Army Retired of Smithville died early Sunday morning at St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital in Murfreesboro. He was an Elder for over 30 years at the Smithville Church of Christ and a retired General Contractor.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at the Smithville Church of Christ. Dan Gulley and Ralph Vaughn will officiate. Burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens with military honors. Visitation will be Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the service time at 1:00 p.m. at the Smithville Church of Christ.
Colonel Nichols, a 25 year veteran of the United States Army, was born and reared in Algood, a part of neighboring Putnam County. In February 1941, he was part of the Tennessee Army National Guard based in Cookeville and said unit was soon called into WWII. He attended Officer Candidate School and became Second Lieutenant and later becoming First Lieutenant. Following the War, he returned to the Volunteer State to further his education at Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville. While there, he met a young lady whom he described as “the prettiest girl on campus”. Marie Patterson from Smithville would later become Mrs. Glen Nichols and the mother to Glen, Jr. and Sharon. He then attended American University in Washington where he received a Masters Degree. During this time, Officer Nichols remained in the Army Reserve. Major Nichols’ unit was activated in 1947 and shipped to Japan. Later our country was drawn into the Korean War, where he commanded an artillery unit. Following a quarter-century of military service, Colonel Glen Nichols, Sr. taught business and economics at his alma mater, Tennessee Tech University. He also enjoyed the building trade, had his own construction company and left his mark on several significant properties in the Middle Tennessee area. He also had a distinguished career with the Model Cities program.
Mr. Nichols was one of the seven original founders of the Smithville-DeKalb County Chamber of Commerce over 50 years ago.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Cora Etta Lee Nichols and mother of his children, Marie Patterson Nichols; a sister, Reba Stamps; and a brother, Robert Nichols.
Nichols is survived by his wife, LaMurle Jarrett Parker Nichols of Smithville. One son, Glen, Jr. and Margaret Nichols and a daughter, Sharon and Dale Beaty all of Smithville. Two stepdaughters, Mimi Bowling of Mt. Juliet and Lynn Fann of Texas. Ten grandchildren, Jennifer and Brian Light of Knoxville, Amanda Mathis and Abby Evans of Smithville, Kerri and Adam Hudson of Nashville, Patterson and Brad Wilson of Knoxville, Lori and David Purnell of Lebanon, Josh and Wendy Bowling of Nashville, Kelly and Marco Marcini of Italy, Amy and Mark Strauss and Ben and Marissa Fann all of Texas, and Michael and Monica Beaty of McMinnville. Fifteen great grandchildren. Two brothers, John Thomas and Dorothy Nichols and Earl Young Nichols all of Algood. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

79 year old Dorothy Ward Turner of Smithville died Monday. She was a member of the Temple Baptist Church and was a retired owner and operator of Sportsman Restaurant. The funeral will be Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Eugene Adkins will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at 1:00 p.m. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carlos and Ruth Murphy Ward. Survivors include her husband, Arvid Turner of Smithville. Two daughters, Sue and Ronnie Cook of Smithville and Brenda and Jeff Safranik of Wisconsin. Three sons, Tim Mullins of Smithville, J.R. and Loretta Mullins of McMinnville, and Dylan Roller of Smithville. Seven grandchildren, Angie Moreno of Illinois, Desiree Ferrell of Smithville, Christopher McPherson of Smithville, Tim Mullins, Jr. of Smithville, Greg Taylor of Mt. 85 year old Louis Fuson of Liberty died Friday at DeKalb Community Hospital. He was a DeKalb County native, a farmer, and a founding deacon of the Faith Congregational Methodist Church. The funeral will be Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Faith Congregational Methodist Church. Freddie Savage and Dennis Campbell will officiate and burial will be in Whorton Springs Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at Anderson Funeral Home and from noon until the service at the church. Fuson was preceded in death by his parents, Solon Fuson and Verda Midgett Fuson; a son, Jerry Fuson; a daughter, Joyce Fuson; and a brother, Freddie Brown Fuson. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Reba Driver Fuson of Liberty. Children, Rebecca and husband James Taylor of Liberty; Layne and wife Darlene Fuson of Liberty; and Tracy and wife Stephanie Fuson of Liberty. Marion Katharyn Cantrell Green
Marion Katharyn Cantrell Green, 86, died Tuesday, January 27, 2015, of natural causes. She was a long-term survivor of a stroke suffered 17 years earlier.
She was born April 21, 1928, to the late Dewey Lee and Hazel Parsley Cantrell. She married Joe Houston Green on May 21, 1947, and they lived a long life together in the Green Hill community.
Marion was preceded in death by her husband Joe, son Joe Allan, sister Dorothy (Paul) Bratcher, and great-grandsons Hunter and Harrison Bryan.
She was an incredibly devoted, hardworking woman throughout her life, both as a seamstress and homemaker. But her life’s work and proudest accomplishments were caring for and loving those who knew her as Ma, Mother and Granny.
Marion was a quintessential wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother—exceedingly kind, gentle and always forgiving. Her family will forever remember her as a living embodiment of unconditional love.

Marcelle “Doris” Collins 86 years old of Fort Lauderdale FL had passed away on January 6th, 2015 at the Holy Cross Catholic Hospice Care. She was born November 15th, 1928 in Lawrence, MA. She had fought a long battle with a life threatening illness. She had moved to South Florida in 1968 and would retire after a career with Motorola in Plantation, FL. She lived a short time in Smithville with her mother and attended St.Gregory’s Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, George Lavigne and ArmosaDubois Lavigne of Lawrence, MA, a sister Marie Gloria Henderson and a daughter, Dorothy Marie Collins. Survivors include her children: daughters Patricia Wilt and Margaret Collins and sons, David John and Joseph Paul, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and nieces and a nephew. Wanda Ann Miller Jones, age 67, passed away Monday, January 26, 2015 at Stones River Hospital E/R. She was a native of Cannon Co.
Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Valton Jones of Woodbury; 3 Children, Charles Roger Jones of Woodbury, Larry Douglas (Ima) Jones of McMinnville, Vickie Lynn (Dewayne) Patterson of Woodbury; Grandchildren, Joshua Brandon Jones of McMinnville, Jonathan Bradley Jones of McMinnville, David Lee Caswell of McMinnville, Kayla Rae Patterson of Murfreesboro, Everett Chase III, Brittany Chase, Travis Devin Patterson, Zachary Robinson, Savannah Lee Jones, & Shevi Dawn Patterson. Also surviving are 5 Great Grandchildren.
Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her parents, Odis Parker Miller & Laura Underhill Miller; & Siblings, John A. Miller, Bobby Brown Miller, & Pauline Burkett
She was a retired custodian.
Funeral services will be 3 PM Thursday, January 29, 2015 at the Chapel of Woodbury Funeral Home with Bro. Daniel Hayes officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Gardens Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 3 to 9 PM Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at Woodbury Funeral Home.
