Eleanor Smart Bontrager age 96 of Smithville, passed away Tuesday night, June 6, 2017 at Woodbury Health & Rehab. She was born October 17, 1920 to her parents, the late Jesse and Catherine VanValkenburg Smart. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Amos R. Bontrager; 1 son, Michael Charles Bontrager; 1 great-grandson, David Alan Fugle; 8 brothers and sisters, Floyd Smart, Harriet Mills, Ethel Seaburg, Leo Smart, Leon Smart, Jesse Smart, Louise Calnan, Kenneth Smart. Ms. Eleanor was a member of the Darien Methodist Church in New York and attended the Smithville First United Methodist Church. She was the owner of Dolly’s Beauty Salon in New York and was a member of the Busy Bee’s in Smithville. Survivors include 3 children, Eugene A. (Margaret) Bontrager of Darien Center, NY, Caroly (Frank) Mazurik of Watertown and Lynn (Patricia) Bontrager of Carthage; 20 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be 2 PM Sunday, June 11, 2017 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Michael Hale officiating and interment to follow in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation with the family will be on Saturday 4 PM until 8 PM and Sunday 12 Noon until the time of the service at 2 PM. In addition to flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or to the charity of your choice, in memory of Ms. Eleanor.
