The Smithville Fire Department is making application for a FEMA grant to help pay for the purchase of new hydraulic rescue equipment and accessories.
If approved, the department could get a $25,000 grant. The city’s local matching portion is 5%.
Chief Charlie Parker asked for permission to make the application during last week’s meeting of the Mayor and Board of Aldermen. “I would like to request permission to apply for the FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG). What we are actually shooting for is one of their micro grants which is a $25,000 grant that has a 5% match which would be a $1,250 match that we would have to pay if we get that. At the present time we’ve got that in our capital outlay budget so we do have the money to do the match if we were to get the grant. But I do need permission from the governing body to apply for it,” said Chief Parker.
The alderman granted approval.
