Ruby Bennett Horton

69 year old Ruby Bennett Horton of Alexandria died Saturday at Quality Care in Lebanon. She was the daughter of the late David Jay Bennett and Elsie Snyder Bennett. Horton was a Baptist and operated the Country Auctions in Alexandria. She is survived by her Husband, Charles Horton of Alexandria; Son, Glynn (Diana) Glover of Smithville; 2 Grandchildren, Misty Lynn Glover (Jay George) of McMinnville and Buddy Glover of Lebanon; 1 Great-Grandson, Dalton Jay George; Step-Grandson, Waymon Walker; Mother, Elsie Bennett of Lebanon; Brother, Thurman (Brenda) Bennett of Lebanon; Nephew, David (Deb) Bennett of Lebanon; Nieces, Connie (Tim) Tonguette of Lebanon, Anna Raye (Doug) Raines of Lebanon. Funeral Services will be conducted 11:AM Tuesday at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with burial to follow in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Hayes Thomas Leech

82 year old Hayes Thomas Leech of Smithville died Saturday at NHC of Smithville. He was a Jehovah’s Witness. The funeral will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Monday from 5-8 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 10:30 a.m. Leech was a former Civilian Operating Engineer at Arnold Air Force Base in Tullahoma. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane Leech; his parents; and a son, Steve Thomas Leech. He is survived by a grandson, Stephen Raleigh Leech and two granddaughters, Veronica Marie Miller and Brandy Michele Nicholl all of Arizona. Opal Kitchings

98 year old Opal Kitchings died at Baptist Memorial Hospital in New Albany, Mississippi on Monday. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Daisy Malone Foutch; her husband, Charlie Boyd Kitchings; and two sisters, Lucille Malone and Anna Foutch. She was a homemaker, a certified music teacher at the Alexandria and Brush Creek Schools, and a member of the West Main Baptist Church in Alexandria. She is survived by a daughter, Lyna Charles Rorie of Oxford, Mississippi, a granddaughter, Robin and husband Ben Bolton of Oxford, Mississippi, James W. Rorie and wife Kapie of Memphis. Five great grandchildren, Rorie, Benjamin, and Ann Lindsey Bolton and Maverick and Lexie Grace Rorie. The funeral will be Saturday at 12:00 p.m. at the New Hope Baptist Church in Alexandria with visitation from 10:00 a.m. until the service time on Saturday. Burial will be in the New Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to West Main Baptist Church in Alexandria and New Hope Baptist Church. Terry Allen Barnes

58 year old Terry Allen Barnes of Smithville died Monday at Vanderbilt Medical Center. He was a plumber with Barnes Plumbing, a Baptist, and a veteran of U.S. Army. The funeral will be Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Phil Tollett will officiate and burial will be in the Bonham Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. He was preceded In death by his mother, Dorotha Barnes; two brothers, Teddy and Tommy Barnes; and his grandparents. Survivors include his father, Jack Barnes of Smithville. A son, Richard and wife Kim Goodrich of Florida. A sister-in-law, Barbara Barnes of Smyrna. Wilma Hillis Tolbert

91 year old Wilma Hillis Tolbert, a resident of the Webb House in Smithville died Sunday.
She was a long-time member of Vultee Church of Christ and served there for many years as the Church Secretary.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Woodlawn’s Dignity Hall on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. with Dr. Carl McKelvey officiating.
Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park’s Garden of the Last Supper.
The family invites friends to gather with them Tuesday evening for a time of visitation at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home in Nashville from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and again one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
Tolbert was preceded in death by her parents, James Robert and Lena Marie Hillis, and husband, Thomas Tolbert. She is survived by her sons, Harrell (Gwen) Tolbert of Smithville, and Tommy (Melissa) Tolbert of Nashville; three grandchildren, Tara Tolbert, Lauren (Drew) Whitfield, and Lindsey Tolbert and her fiancee, Chris Safley; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Tolbert of Murfreesboro, and brother, Lloyd Hillis of Fairborn, Ohio.

95 year old Vena Fuston of Smithville died Friday at DeKalb Community Hospital. She was a member of the Dry Creek Baptist Church for 83 years and was a Sunday School Teacher and the Church Clerk for 37 years. She was also retired from the DeKalb County School System, a factory worker, and a homemaker. The funeral will be Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Dry Creek Baptist Church. Donald Owens will officiate and burial will be in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Saturday from 4-8 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home and from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at 2:00 p.m. at the church. Fuston was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Fuston; parents, Palace and Nancy Curtis Crips; a brother, Austin Crips, and a sister-in-law, Tincy Crips. She is survived by a son, Bob Earl Fuston and his wife, Linda Fuston. two grandchildren, Tony and wife Robbin Fuston and Gina and husband Richard Close; three great grandchildren, Trey Fuston and Caden and Conner Close; and two step grandchildren, Keshia and Westley Poss all of Smithville. 73 year old Izena Griffin of Smithville died Thursday at DeKalb Community Hospital. She was a homemaker and a member of the Brethren in Christ. The funeral will be Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Bryan Jones will officiate and burial will be in the Peeled Chestnut Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.; Saturday from noon until 7:00 p.m.; and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Griffin was preceded in death by her husband, Martin Griffin; parents, James Monroe and Jessie Edith Young; a son, James Ross Griffin, and a sister, Elizabeth Mahler. Survivors include a daughter, Judy and husband Steve Merriman; two grandchildren, Steve Merriman and Jake and wife Joyce Merriman; three great grandchildren, Annabell, Austin, and Hallie Merriman all of Smithville. Jo Bill Murphy Cook

Jo Bill Murphy Cook, 82, of Smithville passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on Thursday, November 28, 2013. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and a retired secretary for Cumberland Nursery. She was preceded in death by her parents, Grady Lee and Alberta “Bertie” Murphy; her husband, Bratten Hale Cook; her children, Gayden (Cook) Richardson and Steve (Pat Cook Briggs) Cook; her grandson Patrick Ford; and six brothers: LT Murphy, Walter Norvel Murphy, Ronald Murphy, Donald Murphy, Jerry Murphy and Cletus Murphy.
She is survived by her son, Bratten (Judy) Cook II of Smithville; two daughters, Murphy Ford of Nashville, and Jo Lynn (Mike) Brown, of Nashville; and son-in-law Buck Ford. Grandchildren: Megan Cook, of Smithville, TN; Bratten Cook III, of Cookeville, TN, Andrew Cook, of Murfreesboro, TN; Jesse Ford, Tucker Ford, and James Ford, of Nashville,TN; Elliot Cook, of Smithville, TN; and Collin Cook, of Lexington, TN. Great-grandchildren: Devin Cook, Ari Cook, and Bratten Cook IV of Smithville, TN. Two brothers, Kenneth (Joyce) Murphy, and Grady (Dot) Murphy; three sisters, Pat Bain, Wanda Barr, and Peggy (Wayne) Patterson; and four sisters-in-law, Peggy Murphy , Janie Cook Knowles and Jeanine Cook Caldwell. One brother-in-law, Joe Stone. The family would like to thank her special friends Evelene Davis and Wilalene Brock for their love, care and support.
The visitation will be held at Love-Cantrell Funeral Home on November 29 from 2-7 p.m., and on November 30 from from 9 a.m. until the funeral service at 1:00 p.m., which will also be held at Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. George “Little George” Mancefield Johnson, Jr

48 year old George “Little George” Mancefield Johnson, Jr. of Walling died at his residence. He was born in Smithville, son of George Mancefield Johnson, Sr. and the late Nellie Wood. He was employed as a prison guard in Pikeville and he was a member of the Spring Hill Baptist Church. In addition to his father, Johnson is survived by his adopted mother, Jewell Hoffman of Sparta; sister, Debra Bain and husband Kenny of Smithville; sister, Teresa Ann Johnson of Dowelltown; sister, Janie Johnson of Dowelltown; niece, Nelda Bandy; nephew, Kenny Bain, Jr.; special great nieces, Tanisha and Briana Bandy; special great nephews, Jacob Bandy, Gavin and Braxton Bain, and Dayne Powell; and many friends and other relatives. In addition to his mother, he was preceeded in death by a niece, Stacey Powell. The family will recieve friends and neighbors for a visitation on Friday from 2 until 8 pm at the Oak Lawn Funeral Home Chapel in Sparta. The family will also recieve friends for a visitation at the Spring Hill Baptist Church on Saturday from 10 am until 1 pm with the funeral service to follow at 1 pm. 65 year old Linda Sue Summers of Smithville died Sunday at UT Medical Center in Knoxville. She was a homemaker. The funeral will be Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Danny Bandy will officiate and burial will be in the Pedigo-Summers Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until the service at 1:00 p.m. She was preceded in death by her father, Eddie Robinson; a sister, Sally Judkins; and a grandchild, Star Palermo. Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Bobby Summers of Smithville. Children, Richard and wife Donna Summers of Dale Ridge, Susan Lanier of Pea Ridge, Diane Summers of Smithville, Linda Oliver of Smithville, and Cindy Thomas of Dale Ridge.
