66 year old Minnie Lee Poss of Smithville died Friday at DeKalb Community Hospital. She was a Baptist and an employee of Federal Mogul. 88 year old Jacqueline Robinson of Smithville died Friday at her residence. She was a member of the Elizabeth Chapel Baptist Church and was retired from Kingston Timers. 85 year old Christene M. Adamson of Liberty died Wednesday at DeKalb Community Hospital. She was a retired U.S. Postmaster and a 50 year member of the O.E.S.#488. The funeral will be Friday at 3:00 p.m. at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Elders Charles Allen Gentry and Dewey Dyer will officiate and burial will be in Salem Cemetery in Liberty. 86 year old Rosa Belle Cabral of Smithville and formerly of Falmouth, Massachusetts died Friday after a long illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Cabral of Falmouth, Massachusetts. She is survived by three sons and their wives, Kenneth and Marilyn Cabral of Smithville, Ronald and June Cabral of Sparta, and Steven and Lynda Cabral of East Falmouth, Massachusetts. Also six grandchildren, Kim Cabral of Smithville, Kristen and Eric Kulkarni of Smithville, Tim and Carla Cabral of Sparta, Titus Cabral of Sparta, Kathy Cabral of Murfreesboro, and Allen and Trisha Cabral of Duffield, Virginia. Three great grandchildren, Allisha, Kara, and Evan Cabral of Duffield, Virginia and a sister, Brenda Vincent of Milton, Louisiana. She was a member of the Smithville Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses. There will be a memorial service at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Sparta on Friday at 6:30 p.m. with visitation beginning at 4:30 p.m. Ronald Cabral will officiate.

Lois Ruth Smith Anderson peacefully passed away on Friday, October 4, 2013 in the home built by her Grandfather, and where she had many childhood memories. She reflected that she “courted” her husband, John in the parlor. Mrs. Anderson was born to Norman and Vora Smith on December 6, 1919. She is preceded in death by her husband John O. Anderson, brothers Norman Smith and Warren G. Smith, and a sister, Ruth Lucille Smith Whittaker, Clark. Lois leaves behind a sister, Wands Smith Briggs and numerous nieces, nephews and their families, as well as her foster children, the Baker family.
Lois had a long career as an educator. She began her career teaching in a one room schoolhouse at Cherry Hill. Lois then taught at Baxter Seminary and David Lipscomb and then for many years as a professor of English at Tennessee Technological University, from where she retired.
Mrs. Anderson was an avid community leader and was very active in Silver Point Church of Christ, as well as Jefferson Street Church of Christ. After her retirement, Lois volunteered thousands of hours at Cookeville Regional Hospital. She and her late husband, John were both very active in the Republican Party, both serving as delegates at national conventions; Lois was also elected as TN State Republican Chairwoman.

92 year old Mable Waggoner of Smithville died Tuesday at NHC. She was a homemaker and a Pentecostal. The funeral will be Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. 58 year old Julia Lynne Walker of Sparta died Friday at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She worked at Wilmar Market. The funeral will be Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. 70 year old Lonnie Estes died Friday at DeKalb Community Hospital. Born in Cannon County, Estes was a member of the Short Mountain Church of God and he was retired from the Cannon County Highway Department. The funeral will be Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Woodbury Funeral Home. Charlie Lawson will officiate and burial will be in the Gunter Grizzle Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 11:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. Estes was preceded in death by his parents, Grover and Viella Thomas Estes and infant sister, Leona Estes. Survivors include four children, Donnie and wife Rie Estes of Beth Page, Michael Estes, Rose and husband Arthur Brown, and Jennifer and husband Glenn Edge all of Smithville. Four grandchildren, Michael and Christopher Caldwell and Johnathon and Cody Edge. Four sisters, Betty and husband Jessie Tanner, Ruth and husband Medford Murphy, and Virginia and husband Jay Waycaster all of the Short Mountain Community and Dorothy Hobby of the Pea Ridge Community. A motorcycle accident in Lebanon Friday night claimed the life of a dentist with ties to DeKalb County.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol reports that 62 year old Dr. Steven Thaxton died after his 1994 Harley Davidson ran onto a shoulder and hit some gravel while going around a curve on Hickory Ridge Road. Troopers said he lost control of the motorcycle and ran off the right side of the road. Thaxton was traveling west at 4555 Hickory Ridge Road near the Bonnie Valley Drive intersection when the wreck happened just before 9:30 p.m. Thaxton was wearing a helmet.
Thaxton was a dentist in Lebanon for 35 years. He was an elder at First Presbyterian Church, president of the Lebanon Flying Club, an FAA-certified flight instructor and certified flight instructor of instruments. Both he and his son, Paul, were Eagle Scouts. He was also chairperson for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital bicycle rodeos and served on several other civic committees.
The family of Dr. Thaxton will be receiving friends at Sellars Funeral Home in Lebanon on Monday from 4-8 p.m. The Memorial Service is 4 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church at 304 W. Main St. in Lebanon.
A graduate of DeKalb County High School, Dr. Thaxton is survived by his wife of 38 years, Brenda Thaxton. He is also survived by two children, Stefanie and Paul Thaxton. Biblings, Barry (Charlene) Thaxton, of Alexandria, Gay Cerney, of Portsmith Virginia and Walter Thaxton, of Lebanon.
Dr. Thaxton graduated from Tennessee Technological University with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. He graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry in 1975 with his doctorate in dental surgery. He served two years in the U.S. Army as a captain at Fort Polk, La. Dr. Thaxton was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for “his expertise and rare talent in child management.”
Steve was a member and master of the Academy of General Dentistry, American Dental Association, Tennessee Dental Association, Tennessee 4th District Dental Society, Officer of the Tennessee Academy of General Dentistry, the American Endodontic Society, International Dental Health Foundation, Implantology Groups, Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation, on the Tennessee Dental Board Committee on Sedation, Tennessee Dental ACE award recipient and completed his IV sedation residency at the University of Alabama Dental School.

74 year old Mrs. Bobbie Attress Prater of Woodbury died Saturday. She was born in Cannon County. Her parents were the late Snow Bryson and Dovie Lee (Jones) Bryson. Also preceding her in death are her husband, Royce Wayne Prater and a daughter, Melissa Leayne Prater and two special friends, her dogs, Rambo and Rusty.
She is survived by her daughter, Karen & Wade Isner of Woodbury; sons, Anthony Wayne Prater of Smithville and Royce Edward Prater of Woodbury; sister, Ida Smith of Woodbury; three grandchildren, Royce Anthony “Tony” & Amber Rose Prater, Royce Bryson Prater and Mattison Daye Prater; great granddaughter, Cali Rose Prater; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Glyn & Joan Prater of Woodbury, Jeanette Barrett of Woodbury and Wayne & Betty Lewis of Lousiville, KY; also, one special friend, her dog Rufus.
Mrs. Prater was a member of the Church of Christ. Growing up in Woodbury she graduated Central High School in the Class of 1955. She was a retired employee of Colonial Shirt Factory. After retiring she and her husband worked together selling furniture at craft shows and flea markets. They called their business, Wayne’s Oak Furniture. She enjoyed feeding and watching humming birds. She enjoyed sports, watching the Vols or Titans play. She especially loved to watch her children and grandchildren’s games. Many people remember her being so excited watching the games, coaching and refereeing from the sidelines.
Visitation will be held at Smith Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 from 11-7 PM. Memorial services will follow in the Smith Funeral Home chapel. Al Bugg will officiate.
