80 year old Warren Melville Howe of Smithville died Wednesday at DeKalb Community Hospital. He was a Protestant and a retired pharmacy sales executive. The family has chosen direct cremation. No visitation will be held at the funeral home. Howe was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Sarah Howe; a son, Dave Howe and a brother, Bob Howe. Survivors include his wife, Mickey Howe of Smithville. Three sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Jane Howe of Old Hickory and Rick Howe and Brad Howe of Florida. One daughter and son-in-law, Leslie and Rick Rocha of Florida. One step daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Gary Fuson of Smithvile and three step sons and daughters-in-law Roy and Sherry Smith of Smithville, Keith Smith and Kathy Chaffee and Mark and Peggy Smith all of Michigan. Martha Allene Cripps Keith – age 95 of White House, Tennessee passed away Friday, April 26, 2013. Born in Smithville, Tennessee Wednesday, December 19, 1917 she is preceded in death by parents Livie & Pearl Elledge Cripps; husband, Wilson Keith, brothers, Ray & Carl Cripps; sisters Hilda & Josephine Cripps.
Mrs. Keith worked 13 years at the Goodlettsville Dairy Queen; enjoyed growing her flowers; was a member of Temple Baptist Church in White House; she is survived by her daughter, Jane Robertson; sisters, Opal (Clyde) Jones, Opha Turner, Corinne Clark, Doris (Gene) Rowland; brothers, Tom (Georgia) Cripps, Lloyd (Jessie) Cripps.
Funeral services will be 12:00 Tuesday, April 30, 2013 in the chapel of Forest Lawn Funeral Home with Rev. H. D. Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Terry Cripps, Jerald Cripps, Mike Jones, Mike Marks, Gary Whittaker, Tim Bowles, Ricky Turner, Mark Paul.

32 year old Jeremy Ray Ferrell of Smithville died Sunday at DeKalb Community Hospital. He was disabled and a Baptist. A graveside service will be Monday at 4:00 p.m. at the Beech Hill Cemetery in the Gassaway community. No visitation will be held at the funeral home. Ferrell was preceded in death by two brothers, Garry Glen and Michael Wayne Ferrell; his maternal grandmother, Claince Davis and maternal grandfather, Johnny Lee Davis. Survivors include his parents, James and Ethel Cooper; two brothers, Steven and wife Amy Ferrell and Jonathan and wife Angie Ferrell of Smithville. Brothers at heart, Chris and wife Tori South and Justin Braswell. Nieces and nephews, Ella Beth Ferrell, Shawn and Linda West, and C.J. South all of Smithville. Paternal grandfather, Matthew Cooper and paternal grandmother, Joyce Simmons both of Morrison. Paternal grandmother, Jackie Cooper of West Virginia. Several aunts and uncles also survive. 67 year old Shirley Jean Southard of Smithville died Friday at DeKalb Community Hospital. She was a waitress and a Baptist. The funeral will be Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Mt. Holly Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from noon until 9:00 p.m. and Monday from 9:00 a.m. until the service time at 2:00 p.m. She was preceded in death by her parents, George Washington and Margaret Elizabeth Arnold Caldwell; one son, Earl Bryant; two daughters, Rita Cantrell and Trina West; and a brother, Jr. Caldwell. Survivors include a daughter, Monica and husband David Summers. One grandson, Travis Summers; one granddaughter, Cindy and husband Ken Taylor; and four great grandchildren, Devin Summers, Shauna, Abbi, and Kenlee Taylor all of Smithville. 78 year old J.B. Williams of Smithville died Monday at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. He was a Christian and he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the VFW. Williams was also owner and operator of Broad Street Shell for ten years and was service manager at Stribling Chevrolet for fourteen years. The funeral will be Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Jimbo Eddins will officiate. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the service at 1:00 p.m. Williams was preceded in death by his parents, Allie and Ethel Hendrixson Williams; four brothers, Ray, Eugene, Louie, and Ralph Williams; and a sister, Mable Williams. Survivors include four sons, Brent and wife Cheryl Williams, Kent and wife Shannon Williams, and Brad and wife Holly Williams all of Smithville and Greg and wife Stephanie Williams of Nashville. 54 year old Belinda Harriett Harness of Dowelltown died Sunday in Warren County. She was a former employee of NHC Healthcare Center. A memorial service will be Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the New Life Pentecostal Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Cordell and Iva Rutherford Britt; a sister, Sandy Greer; and a brother, Gary Britt. Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Harness of Dowelltown. Four children, Lisa Porterfield of Dowelltown, Tiffany Greer of Nashville, Jennifer Campos of Murfreesboro, and Trey Whitaker of Nashville. 68 year old Earl Dyer of Smithville died Tuesday at his residence. He was a mechanic and a member of the Apostolic Ark Church in Murfreesboro. 69 year old Wanda Lee Campbell Hill of Woodbury died Monday at Stones River Hospital. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Woodbury Funeral Home. Van Nichols will officiate and burial will be in the Reed Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the service. She is survived by her husband, James Hill of Woodbury; Sisters, Ann Ferrell and her friend, James Estes both of Woodbury, Freda and Jerry Johnson of Liberty; 2 brothers-in-law, J.T. Campbell & Ricky Dodd both of Liberty; Sister-in-law, Paulette Duggin of Smithville; 8 nephews and 4 neices. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hoyte and Allie Mears Duggin, 1st Husband, Johnny Campbell; Brother, Bobby Duggin; Sisters, Geraldine Campbell and Denise Dodd; 2 nephews, Russell & Lynn Parker. A member of the Liberty United Methodist Church, she was a house keeper at Stones River Hospital. Melvin Eugene “Gene” Gillette
84 year old Melvin Eugene “Gene” Gillette of Smithville died Sunday after a long illness.
A retired owner/operator of Gillette Service Center, a retired United States Air Force veteran for 20 years of the Korean and Vietnam wars, and a member of the Baptist Church, he was the son of the late Charlie L. and Cleo Della Neeley Gillette. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Ralph Gillette; niece, Mildred Lee; and granddaughter, Amber Nicole Tilton.
He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Gena and Steve Tilton of McMinnville; one son, Greg Lee Gillette; two grandsons, Kaleb and Nicholas Tilton of McMinnville; sister-in-law, Maureen Gillette of the Dibrell Community; special friend, Jo Grace Lowery of Smithville; and many more friends and family survive.
He was a member of American Legion Post 173, VFW Post 5064 and the Lions Club. He was a volunteer for many years with the VA Hospital.
The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at High’s Chapel with Bill Hall officiating. Burial will follow in New Union Cemetery, DeKalb County with full military honors administered by VFW Post 5064 and American Legion Post 173. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service Wednesday at High’s.
