Johnny Len Cantrell age 52 of Smithville passed away Thursday morning at Harton Regional Medical Center in Tullahoma. He was born September 15, 1962 to his parents, the late Hamp, Jr. and Rebecca Davis Cantrell. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Paulette Estes. Johnny was a Baptist and worked in Construction work. He is survived by 5 children, Johnna Cantrell of Smithville, Rocky Cantrell of Shelbyville, Porsche Cantrell of Lewisburg, Heather Soto of Smithville, Matthew Cantrell of Smithville; 9 grandchildren; 4 sisters, Deanna (Jerry) Brooks, Tammy (Jerry) Maynard, Tonya (Rocky) Menix, and Michelle (Tim) Snipes all of Smithville; 1 brother, Dwight Cantrell of Smithville. Johnny’s request was to be cremated. There will be a graveside memorial service held 1:00PM Saturday, May 30, 2015 at the Mt. View Cemetery at Young Bend with Bro. Michael Hale officiating. Justin Nicholas Roper
Justin Nicholas Roper age 31 of Smithville, passed away Monday, May 25, 2015 of an apparent drowning at Center Hill Lake in Smithville. He was born November 26, 1983 to his parents, Robin Roper and Angie Green Chapman. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, John and Pat Roper; aunt, Karen Lobb and uncle, Rick Roper. Justin was a member of the Webb’s Chapel United Methodist Church and was a woodworker. Survivors include his wife, Sheena Roper of Smithville; 3 step-children, Reese Shane George, Elizabeth Marie George, and Emily Paulette George; mother and step-father, Angie (Winton) Chapman of Murfreesboro; father and step-mother, Robin (Cathie) Roper of Hermitage; 1 brother, Ryan Patrick (Jackie) Roper of Murfreesboro; 1 nephew, Ryder Patrick Roper; maternal grandmother, Nelda Green of Orangeburg, SC; aunts, Marsha (Clay) Carpenter, Lisa (Jimmy) Davis, John (Ann) Roper, Patti (Glen) Pearson, and Roxanne (Mike) Douglas; cousin, Austin Davis. Mr. Roper’s family have chosen a cremation and there will be a Memorial Service 4:30 PM Friday, May 29, 2015 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel. Visitation with the family will be on Friday 2:PM until the time of the Memorial Service at 4:30PM. Michael George Bryant
Michael George Bryant age 59 of Smithville passed away at his residence Monday May 25, 2015. He was the son of the late George and Katherine McElwaney Bryant. He was a Baptist and Mechanic. Survivors include companion Ruth Guerrant of Smithville; 2 Sisters: Patsy (James) Fuller of Georgia, Linda (Mike) Hampton of Dickson, TN; Brother: Larry Bryant of Nashville; Daughter: Mary Elizabeth Lindsey of Nashville; 3 Step Children: Carol (Chris) Lewis, Joseph and Johnny Huff all of Smithville; Grandchildren: Braxton Linder, C.J. Lewis, Preston Ray. Mr. Bryant’s wishes were to be cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date. DeKalb Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Janice Nicole Butler
59 year old Janice Nicole Butler of Alexandria died Sunday at DeKalb Community Hospital. She was a member of the Northside Church of Christ. Butler was also employed at Three Forks Market in Watertown. The funeral will be Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Burnes Lyons will officiate. Burial will be in the Dowell Cemetery in Alexandria. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Butler was preceded in death by her father, Robert Rutland and a brother, Ernest Rutland. Survivors include her mother, Betty Beasley Martin of Alexandria. Two nephews, Jermaine McCoy of Smithville and Ernest Rutland, Jr. of Nashville. A great niece and nephew Azya McCoy, Antwon McCoy and DeShown Reeder all of Smithville. Two uncles, James and Kenneth Beasley of Arizona. Three aunts, Mayrene Bates of California, JoAnn Floyd of Pennsylvania, and Jeanette League of Smithville. Two special friends, Gwendalyn League and Billie Ann Tubbs of Smithville. Marshall Fish
Marshall Fish age 51 of Liberty, passed away Saturday afternoon at DeKalb Community Hospital. He was born April 13, 1964 to his parents, the late Marshall Don and Mallie Frances Crook Fish. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Francine Fish and Judy Bandy. Marshall was a member of Ramah Baptist Church and had been a factory worker and was disabled. He is survived by 2 children, Cody Fish of Smithville and Madeline (Jeremy) Ferdelman of Jacksonville, FL; 1 granddaughter, Kenli Fish; 3 brothers, Ray Donald (Elsie) Fish, Tim (Brenda) Fish and Mark Fish all of Watertown. Funeral services will be conducted 4:30 PM Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Jimmy Atnip officiating and burial to follow in Jones Hill Cemetery. Gene Wallace Mangum
Gene Wallace Mangum, age 88, of McMinnville, Tennessee went home to be with his Lord and Savior on May 22, 2015. He passed quietly at home surrounded by his family and loved ones. Gene was born in Smithville, Tennessee on April 28, 1927, the son of the late Jessie Brown and Novella Bond Mangum. He was raised on the family farm in Smithville, Tennessee.
Gene served his country in the Army Air Corp. out of Eglin Air Force Base in Ft. Walton Beach, Florida. After military service he returned home, met and married the love of his life, Udeena White Mangum. They settled in McMinnville, Tennessee where they began and raised their family. Gene worked at Genesco where he retired at age 55 as a supervisor. He then started his own successful business, Mangum’s Vinyl Siding, and was also a local nurseryman.Gene was a dedicated and founding member of North Hills Church of God of Prophecy, where he was active and instrumental in growing the church through his witness, life testimony, and work. He taught Sunday School for 62 years. A devout Christian, you would find Gene every morning (early) at his dining room table with his Bible open reading the word of God. His walk with his Lord was the source of his strength on his life’s journey.
Gene is survived by three of his six children, Ron (Betty) Mangum of Cookeville, TN, Vickie (Patrick) Conway of Ocean Ridge, FL, Phyllis (Michael) Beecher of Joelton, TN; stepson Lloyd (Annette) Philpot of Alabama; sister Dora (Joe) Mangum Hutchings of McMinnville, TN; brother Herman (Marilyn) Mangum of Michigan; grandchildren Greg Mangum, Mindy Smith, Amy Mangum, Melody Tollison, Deena Beecher, Robert A. Dunlap, II, and Trence Dunlap; step grandchildren Terrence Conway, Christopher Conway, Brandon Beecher, Craig Beecher, Eva Vaughn, and Ana Philpot; eighteen great-grandchildren and longtime special friend Mildred Bumbalough. Mr. Mangum was preceded in death by his wife Udeena White Mangum and wife Ruth Cowan Philpot, children Christy Leigh Mangum, Jeffery Mangum, and Donna Mangum, parents Jessie Brown and Novella Bond Mangum, six brothers Jimmy Mangum, Jessie “Jack” Mangum, Fred Mangum, Ferman “BeBe” Mangum, Bill Van Hooser, and Johnny Carroll Van Hooser, four sisters Vella Mangum Blythe, Mildred Mangum Odom, Lela Mangum Bolieau, and Elizabeth Van Hooser Cummings.
Funeral service will be 12 PM Noon, Monday, May 25, 2015, in the McMinnville Funeral Home Chapel. Bro. Michael Harris will officiate. Interment will follow at Whorton Springs Cemetery in DeKalb County, TN. The Mangum Family will receive friends Sunday from 12 PM Noon until 4 PM and again Monday from 10 AM until 12 PM Noon at the parlors of McMinnville Funeral Home.

Catherine Elaine Baker age 77 of McMinnville past away Friday May 22, 2015 at St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital in Murfreesboro. She was the daughter of the late Jack and Margaret Uhrig Sharkey. She was a Catholic and worked in housekeeping at NHC. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by husband Gordon Baker, Sr. and 2 Brothers. Funeral services for Ms. Baker will be held 3:PM Tuesday at DeKalb Funeral Chapel with Bro. Larry Briggs officiating and burial in DeKalb Memorial Gardens. Visitation with the family will be Tuesday 11:AM until the time of the service at 3:PM. Survivors include her children: Michael Baker of Sevierville, Jeff Baker of Ohio, Wayne Baker of McMinnville, Dawn Stewart of Sparta, Mona Baker of Smithville, Steven Baker of Nashville and Donna Speaks of Smithville. 18 Grandchildren also survive. Cindy Malone Armour
43 year old Cindy Malone Armour of Dowelltown died Thursday at her residence. She was a member of the Lower Helton The Baptist Church and was employed at DeKalb County Florist. The funeral will be Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Barry Whiteaker and Erie Wood will officiate. Burial will be in DeKalb Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 2-9 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. until the service at 2 p.m. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Billy Malone and E.J. Taylor; and a sister Dana Malone. Survivors include her husband of 25 years, John C. Armour of Dowelltown. Three children, Brittney and husband Nathan Gard of Smithville, Nathan and wife Hannah Armour of Dowelltown, and Kelly Armour of Dowelltown. Three grandchildren, Makenlee and Logan Gard both of Smithville and Klara Armour of Dowelltown. Parents, Wayne and Doris Malone of Dowelltown. A brother, Andy and wife Sara Malone of Smithville. Hubert Nelson Turner
Hubert Nelson Turner, age 75, a Smithville, TN resident and DeKalb Co., TN native died May 21, 2015 at St. Thomas West Hospital in Nashville, TN following a three weeks illness.
He was self employed in lawn care and son of the late Joe and Martha Naomi West Turner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Aubrey Lee, James Gentry and Robert Turner.
Mr. Turner was married November 6, 1971 to Carolyn Duane Mason Turner who survives. He is also survived by special granddaughter, Kendra (Craig) Adcock Smithson of Murfreesboro, TN; sister, Sue Roberts of McMinnville and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 23, 2015 in High’s Chapel with Drew Milligan to officiate. Interment will follow in the Corinth Cemetery in DeKalb County.
Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Friday, May 22, 2015 and Saturday at 11:00 a.m. until time of service at High’s.
Cecil Jack Barnes
82 year old Cecil Jack Barnes of Smithville died Wednesday at his residence. He was a Mason, a self employed plumber, and he attended the Allens Chapel Church. The funeral will be Friday at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Phil Tollett will officiate and burial will be in the Bonham Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-8 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. A Masonic Service will be Thursday at 7 p.m. Barnes was preceded in death by his parents, Otis and Verona Barnes; his wife, Dortha Barnes; three sons, Teddy, Terry, and Tommy Barnes; two brothers, Clarence and James Barnes; and a sister, Clara Hutchinson. Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Barnes of Smyrna. Two sisters, Barbara and Donald Young and Magdalene Cantrell all of Smithville. Four grandchildren, Joe and Angela Barnes of Murfreesboro, Karen and Charlie of Christiana and Alex and Tracy Barnes of Smyrna, and Richard and Kim Goodrich of New Smyrna Beach. Six great grandchildren, Joseph and Trevor Ewing of Christiana, Haley Barnes of Smyrna, and Matthew Cottingham, Arabella and Jackson Barnes of Murfreesboro.
